bubs_42 Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Had a great time tonight. My wife pushed me out the door because I was being a bummer and send me to an Open Mic Night at the Marine Corp Bunker. I went one time a month ago when they were just putting it together and it was a trainwreck so I hadn't gone again. When I got there tonight same thing but it was different mix of about 7 guys and it was fun. I got ready to leave the house with three guitars my 77 Sunburst, Daytona and the Proto. Then I when WTF?, the proto can cover all the ground I need to cover. So off I went with one guitar. Best decision I've made in a while. It was great for covering 7Mary3, Collective Soul and SnoopDog..... Seriously we covered Gin and Juice. Best part of the night I have been banging away in my room to HeyJoe and I've never played it in front of anyone until tonight. It was awsome and I pulled it off completely no F*ck Ups. Its was fun.
ajoso Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 I'm really enjoying my new Prototype. It's amazing just how different it sounds from my other all-mahogany guitars: a Special and a Burny Les Paul Custom. It really does sound like the oft-advertised, but rarely heard, cross between a Fender and a Gibson. In other words, it's bright, but well-balanced. I haven't jammed with it yet, so it will be interesting to hear how it sits with other instruments.
mathman Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 I get to experience it soon. I'm buying Matthew's 84 Proto. Soon to be tracking number watching. ;-)I can't wait to try the tonal possibilities.
belgian Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Now I have a good motivation to put some fresh strings on mine.Proto's rock !
mathman Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 Yes, Yes they do. I just got mine. This thing just sings.
bubs_42 Posted February 7, 2010 Author Posted February 7, 2010 I've put a 90's Phantom or Phantom custom higher on my list. I'm glad you like yours they are great guitars. I have been going to a open mic night for the last 3 weeks. I took the Proto the first night and the other guys keep asking me when I'm going to bring it back. My answer is when I run out of new guitars to bring. So it should be back week 13...

mathman Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 We'll go around in circles! We'll fly high like a bird up in the sky. (yea not the correct lyrics but it works)
bubs_42 Posted July 28, 2010 Author Posted July 28, 2010 The Proto has landed, now I just got to get home. Thank goodness for heat scheduals, starting early and getting off early.
Feynman Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Are you feeling ok? You look a little under the weather to me - I think you better go home before you infect others.
hardheartedbill Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 it's a feeling like no other! congrats and do it again asap
MCChris Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Lord knows I rocked a Proto back in the day: I wasn't sorry to see it go, though. The neck was a pencil and I could never really get a sound I truly liked out of it.
JimHalinda Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 My Phantom Custom is as close as I'll get to a Prototype, it's my go to guitar for the open stage I frequent - beats out an Ibanez semihollow and 2 Les Pauls, both which have the Jimmy Page switching setup. The Hamer just sounds better all around.

bubs_42 Posted July 28, 2010 Author Posted July 28, 2010 Alright, does anyone else use the middle position with the tone turned all the way off? Its like using the middle position on an LP with the bridge ever so slightly rolled off. Sweet! Not to mention the neck is just a little bigger than my last Prototype. Which is prompting me to purchase a 90's Phantom, but not a Custom to rework it the way it should have been IMHO. Whether your a strat or a tele guy that just wants something different but you don't want to lug around a Paul or your a LP guy that doesn't want to by a strat this is your guitar.

I love the sound of it with the tone turned all the way off.So, the answer is yea. Hell yea!
JimHalinda Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 The Phantom Custom neck is a meaty one, definitely not a pencil.
bubs_42 Posted September 25, 2012 Author Posted September 25, 2012 THE PROTOTYPE STILL ROCKS! My Phantom Redux turned out so freaking killer that It gets 98% my playing time. If I can figure out how to twist up another one I will finally have a use for the last Sustainblock in the parts bin.

That is the secret weapon of the '3-coil' pickup. The 3-coils engaged with the tone off is such a cool sound!!!!
bubs_42 Posted September 25, 2012 Author Posted September 25, 2012 Even Better with the setup I have now. The Phat Cat and the Single Coil with the tone all the way off. I fired it up yesterday and didn't even realize the tone was rolled of because it was such a cool sound. I have one more Idea so I'll be looking for a donor soon enough.
