hamerhead Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I'm torn: seeing what Greg has put into this guitar makes me want to 'do it right' and restore as much as possible. On the flip side - it'll never be 'original' so why not make it truly a tone monster and play $hit out of it.What do you think?
acb Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 if the decision is not based on $$$ (the cost difference for restoration - making it your own) then which one will give you more of a thrill every time you pick it up to play?
bubs_42 Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 My vote is to make it a player and enjoy it. I enjoy my 77 its just a great guitar.
bubs_42 Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Playa! Bassboat tangerine.Woooo Horsey, don't go that far.
BCR Greg Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I say Resto-Custom. As original as possible, but with modern pickups to make it kick ass. Kinda like this Beetle.... Completely stock except lowered suspension and better wheels and tires.
Steve Haynie Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 A neck repair will always scare away a potential buyer somewhere. Keep the original look, but put in the electronics that suit you best. Make this one a player and never look back!
santellavision Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I agree, neck issues will haunt you. Have fun and make it rock.
RacerX Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Go ahead and upgrade the pickups, just keep an eye out for a used set of period Dimarzios to keep in the case....best of both worlds, just ask Bubs Mark.
RichF Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 On the flip side - it'll never be 'original' so why not make it truly a tone monster and play $hit out of it.Since it will never be original I think that making it exactly the guitar that you want it to be is the way to go. Adding a great set of pickups will make it a monster. Go for it.

murkat Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 be it the best it is going to be, the way you deem it. Ain't no beauty queen, but she be a well good player I'm rolling with Greg with this one, it will be glorious
belgian Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 yes on the beetle.. I have a '78 Sunburst that has now Phatcats in it..... nothing is sacred.
tomteriffic Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 A Triple Coil, a Floyd and Samurai graphics. NOT!
Jason01 Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 That top looks too clean to change. Like they said, keep it close to original with a few modern touches. Oh, and lose the barn paint.
gorch Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 You won't get it 100% back to original. That train left the station already. I'd make it look close to original but add my personal touch on the electronics in terms of modern vintage.A low wound PAF collection or some P90s would create some nice sounds.
