cynic Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Recently came across these online, never seen one in person. Seems to be done in the prototype style, so I'm thinking someone here may have experience with them and could offer an opinion on them. They come in two different models, SM and SM-Y2D
atquinn Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Horribly wrong in so many ways (for me personally), I can't even begin to go into it . They sound nice when Steve plays them though. -Austin
Feynman Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I like the Y2D on paper, but I've never really tried either.
Steve Haynie Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I own a Steve Morse model. It does not compare to a Hamer in any way other than quality. Steve's original Frankenstrat was a '67 Strat neck on a Telecaster body with more pickups than Leo Fender ever imagined. Music Man copied the carve of the neck and kept the body thickness the same. The neck is 25.5" scale. The body shape is comfortable, perfect for people who are not as comfortable with sculpted Stratocaster bodies. The switches are not hard to understand once you see the diagram. One switch just adds the bridge pickup to whatever is selected by the other switches. If you ever see Steve Morse play live just watch his right hand dancing on the selector switch and the volume knob. You might see some of that on youtube videos.
Scottcrud Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I always thought his original Tele with 5 pickups was cool. The EBMM, not so much.
jisham Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Yeah, that's the one EBMM model that makes me go WTF? every time I see it. Having said that, I've never held or played one. I REALLY want to get an Albert Lee HH w/trem. I've played them a few times at a local GC and absolutely love the RW neck, the body shape, and the sound. Very cool axe IMO.
HAMERMAN Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 To my way of thinking the original SD is meant to give the sounds of a Tele and a HB superstrat in one guitar. Looked at that way I think it largely suceeds. If they offered it lefty I defintely would have saved up and bought one by now.
Feynman Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I think this looks hot, and since I'm all about form over function, I'd love to have one.

He intentionally played right handed because in his opinion the left hand does all the work. The right hand just flails a pick back and forth. It certainly worked for him. You will have to ask Steve Morse or Sterling Ball why you cannot get a left handed Steve Morse model. The local music store has an Albert Lee with a rosewood neck. OH! MY!
SouthernShred Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I had a standard Steve Morse model and LOVED it save the slanted single coil...it had the most perfect neck, easy to setup, great tone, but that middle slanted single got in my way. I sold it when I had to pay medical bills but fully intend to get a Y2D model at some point...amazingly good guitar on par with some much more expensive...
jisham Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I think this looks hot, and since I'm all about form over function, I'd love to have one. That one gives me a little rise. Didn't know a floyded model was available.
MCChris Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 That one gives me a little rise.I'm experiencing some movement as well.
Devnor Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Had one...I thought the slab body was a little clunky but a great feeling V neck on mine. Bought the floyd model but flipped it because of the flat mount. I'd love to have a classic blueburst hardtail. Steve's the man!
