  1. I gig the crap out of mine. It's just a really well rounded, versatile guitar.
  2. Well, apparently half the damn t-nuts on this cabinet are loose, and I had to use a Dremel to get a couple out. A couple of others are too stripped to be used again. ...so going to be a few days. Fucking Marshall.
  3. I used to be a huge Screamin Cheetah Wheelies fan back in my Nashville days, and Joe used to play with him when he was still basically a kid. I always thought this clip of Mike Ferris giving him a little good humored shit was funny. "This boy is cracker all the way to his shoes!"
  4. I think it's collateral damage from the crowd who hates "blooze dads" and "lawyer guitars". Since his audience gets stereotyped as mostly middle-aged, professional men with a fixation on blues, I think he gets a bit of a spillover effect.
  5. Looks like a tulip sticking out a long tongue.
  6. The Splawn QR is what fills the gap for that Plexi/800 levels of volume. Plus, it's one of the few Boutique amps I've played that actually sounds like a beautifully modded Marshall without moving away from what a Marshall sounds like. That's ultimately why I let go of the BE-50 Friedman and Bogner Shiva. They had been refined to the point of not having any teeth left to me. That damn Splawn is so unruly that you have to check your pockets after playing it to make sure it didn't steal your lunch money.
  7. Also, for now, I keep it. I bought a pair of new Fane M65s to go with some greenbacks in this 4x12 instead because that is how addiction works.
  8. I'm actually good on Tubes at the moment. I bought up a couple of quads of this and that suspecting the Tube-ocalypse was about to run prices up. And yes, I might have been part of the reason they went up. But no, for once, I was happy to be ahead of a scarcity panic and you can all bite me.
  9. That's me with every student I've ever taught. Except they never play bass and always wonder what I'm talking about.
  10. Won't be dumb enough to sell one again. I like this one a little better anyway. I've been itching for a plain top Lester, and this actually took care of that. Plus, I've never been a huge fan of quilt tops. Little too much zazz for me.
  11. Lol, well, this is actually going quite differently than I expected.
  12. It's no secret that I went on a pretty huge Marshall spree about two years ago. The only one I have left is a Vintage Modern, which I quite like. Having bought this Friedman JEL 20 and already having a Splawn Quickrod, I'm starting to wonder what the point of have a second 100 watt amp is. I do like it, and I do suspect those amps will get more popular. But I'm also looking at my PayPal Credit account and, while I'm good at avoiding interest charges, I'm thinking how nice it would be to put the money I make in my pocket and not toward staying ahead of a same-as-cash period. I went through a spell where I was playing 4x12s a lot, but those kind of gigs have mostly dried up. And in all honesty, as cool as the VM is, the Quickrod is just a better amp when you need the flexibility that I do when I can justify that much amp. I'm pretty satisfied with what I own at the moment, and I can justify a good combo, a good 20 watt head, and one old dinosaur big iron amp. That QR is hands down my favorite big amp that I've ever owned. I've got a great selection of Charvels, a great old Jackson, and a bunch of cool Lesters. I'm also really happy with the Hamer/Shishkovs I have and the obligatory strat and tele. I'm mostly cool with messing with my pedals. As cool as the VM is, it's not like it's a seriously rare amp. I don't know, I'm not downsizing per se as much as I just have plenty of options for all kinds of sounds and shows. On the other hand, it's not like it would break the bank to hang on to it, and they are my favorite Marshall. If I ever did studio work anymore, I could almost justify it as being good to have around, particularly for leads, but it's unlikely that will ever be something I do a lot ever again. Move it on down the road or hang on to it just in case I'd miss it?
  13. So at the end of the day, music appears discreet but is ultimately continuous.
  14. The more I look at this, the more I think it is probably a plain maple top. It could be hog, but the grain up close just looks much more like the two LPCs I have, one of which is a two piece, natural top. Comparing online, it bears more resemblance to the first than the second, though it's really hard to get a good look at Hamer's all-hog elites because of how shiny they are. It doesn't have the same kind of mineral stripes and graininess up close that I am used to with mahogany. I'm definitely not an expert though. I'll give it a look in the pickup cavity the next time I change strings to see if the cap is a different color than the back.
  15. I gigged a Tally for about a year in a country band in which I also played an ASAT Special and an American Standard Tele. If you were to make a scale where the left is the general 24.75", two-humbucker sound and the right is the general 25.5", single-coil sound, I'd put the Tally smack dab in the middle, except, unlike a PRS, being smack dab in the middle is actually interesting, unique, and fun to play instead of lifeless and boring (yeah, I said it). The Tele would obviously be all the way to the right, and the ASAT Special would be between those two. In my experience, you can get a decent amount "quack" out of any single-coil set up with a 25.5 neck, it's really just a question of how much you have to dial your amp and board in to bring it out. I didn't have to change much with the ASAT Special, but the Tally took some doing and I also had to adjust my playing a bit. You had to work a little to approximate the guitar tone on something like "Fast as You" by Dwight Yoakam. On the other hand, it handled classic rock stuff better than either of them, and it does have a great clean sound. I just wouldn't call it a "Tele on steroids," as people say sometimes. If I was going to describe it, start with imagining a great sounding Les Paul with stock Gibson P-90s in it. Now imagine it with hotter, more articulate pickups and a Fender scale neck. Maybe "Tele on steroids" is somewhat correct if, unlike me, your default Tele sound in your head is Led Zeppelin I and not Brent Mason. That I can definitely see.
  16. I'm the worst for tone reports beyond, "Sounds pretty sweet!" It's not quite as snappy as my last Tally I think. The neck pup is very smooth. But without being to A-B them, it's hard to say. The one I had had been refretted with jumbo frets, so it plays a little different. Not good or bad, just different. I guess in theory it could be a plain maple top. I was hoping it may have a certificated included to know for sure, but alas, no go. It does have all the other case candy, but not that bit. I love it though - never seen one quite like it.
  17. Finally! Man, this thing is just cherry. God, I have missed owning one of these.
  18. We've all paid for seeing tits in one way or another.
  19. Dude was pretty old when he joined AC/DC in Rock and Roll years. He's a stitch younger than Bon, but he was six years older than Malcolm and even more the rest of them. I don't love all the production choices here, but I always thought this was a good sample of his voice in his 20s. As far as the song in question, I really dug it! I don't usually like nostalgia trips, but that had a ton on energy. Best thing Steven Tyler has done in years, lol. America's Grandma most likely to give you some pot.
