Guitar Workbench Lighting

hamerhead

Question

What are you guys using over your workbench? I have a 4-foot span about 2 1/2 feet above the bench where lights could be hung and so far haven't found what I'm looking for. Needs to be really bright (preferably LED), with a cord (no hardwire or batteries), and - as always - cheap.

Any ideas?

If you plan on doing any finishing work or inspection where color accuracy is important, be sure to get a fixture/lamp with the highest CRI (Color Rendering Index) you can find. Cheap fluorescents can be around 70CRI. Most LEDs these days are around 80CRI. Halogen incandescents are 99CRI out of a theoretical maximum of 100. For a workbench I would also recommend a color temperature higher than the 2700K that most "incandescent equivalent" LEDs are. They cast a yellowish warm white or soft white glow that is typically deficient in blues and purples. I personally like 4000K and over 90CRI for my LEDs, but they are next to impossible to find.

They aren't cheap, but if you can find GE branded "Enbrighten"under cabinet fixtures, they claim 98CRI, 3000K and over 1000 lumens from a 2ft. unit. They're linkable and can plug in or be hardwired. I have them in my kitchen and they do a good job.

I've got 4 benches in my shop and two of these on each: http://www.dickblick.com/products/swing-arm-lamp/

Stobro, thank you for posting that info! I'm lightbulb shopping tonight.

I use to have those.

I found these on clearance at a local HD one time (not what they want $ online), bought a few.

Then i have 4 footer florescent shop lights in different bulb flavors all over the shop at each work kiosk.

The company I work for manufactures commercial and industrial light fixtures and some of our LED products deliver as much as 90,000 lumens. They also cost a fortune and aren't sold through regular retail channels.

This one is designed for roadway tunnels:
