Mud when turning volume down?

hamerhead

Question

I have an Epi ES-339 ( http://www.epiphone.com/Products/Electrics/Archtop/Black-Royale-ES-339-PRO.aspx ) that is stock with Alnico Classic PRO pickups split with push/pulls. It sounds great when the volume controls are full up, but turns to mud as soon as you back it down in the slightest.

How do I fix that? ( I know I know - 'Don't turn it down!'.....)

There are a couple things you could try.  First test the volume pots to be sure they're within spec. Second would be to install the treble bleed mod on the volume pots.  On a semi hollow it can be a bit of a chore fishing the harness out then modding it and putting it all back. Takes patience and a good vocabulary (*}%*+^#!!!!)

Stew Mac treble bleed mod page (you can build these cheaper)

If you're going to pull that harness to install treble bleeds, might as well change out the lackluster factory pots and caps while that mess is fished out on the bench. I've done that list to a few semi-hollow Epis without switching pickups and it made positive differences every time.

The Epis use Alpha pots, which are functional but definitely not high quality. I'm with Dave, Jeff, and Jake on this: swapping those jinky pots out for some CTS or Bourns 500k, adding a treble bleed and good caps, and doing it up with the 50s wiring will make things right.

Let me know if you need help acquiring the parts. I'll hook you up.
