Mystery cabinet impedance checking?

stonge

Question

While spelunking through the basement of misfit toys, I excavated a couple of old speaker cabs (an old 4-10 Marshall from the 70s, Traynor 4-12 etc) but I have no idea what impedance the cabs are. Is there a way to check the impedance with a multimeter, or do I have to rip the backs off and trace the wiring?  for that matter there's a pair of mesa 2-12 splits splitstacks and a Mesa 4-12 split splitstack that I don't know the impedance of either (I've always plugged them into 4 ohms jacks but I'm not sure if that's correct. Nothings blown up yet lol).

Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Rule of thumb DC resistance measurement will be ~ 66% - 75% of impedance measurement

e.g., cab measures ~12Ω,   Impedance is anywhere between 18 to 16 Ω, so it's likely ~16 Ω.  FWIW, impedance of a cabinet is... theory... blah blah blah  [/snoozefest]

Yep, divide your DC resistance measurement by .75 and you'll be close.
