After The GAS is Gone

(Sung to the tune of BB King's great hit? "The GAS is gone......The GAS is gone, gone away").

So, after selling a net of 40 some guitars and basses since the beginning of last year, I have tucked a fair number of bucks into the gear fund (or somewhere). I KNOW there are a bunch of great instruments for sale out there......I look and just go, "Meh". If I was myself, I'd buy 3 or 4 tomorrow. I mean SOMETHING irresistible might actually appear tomorrow.  But I cannot work up much enthusiasm for any additional guitars lately. Maybe I just need to learn to enjoy prosperity......

Or maybe I should check whether the head cook is spiking my food with Beano.....Hard to believe I might actually be maturing. God forbid!

In fairness, I DID select some nice woods and stick a pair of buns in the oven, but it may be 2018 before I even get an estimate of delivery time on either one. No point in getting too worked up there either.

Brave New World. Or something.......Better head off and play something I already own.......

I have probably owned about 40 guitars in my lifetime.  Not all at once.  Ticking over significantly beneath that number currently.

My GAS hasn't diminished it's just I am pretty happy with what I have in that it can cover pretty much most tones and playing requirements.  Don't get me wrong there are plenty of guitars I really fancy but only a few that I really crave.  I have not doubled up on anything.

My GAS free days are typically counted in hours. Having the HEL 'Standard' and the Addict Burrito2 chugging towards the completed/delivery threshold has helped keep mine at bay for a while.

That is, until I joined an 80's guitar page on FB. Sweet Aunt Petunia! The guitar porn that's being purveyed there has me foaming at the mouth...  :P

If GAS is not limited to guitars, I have never been GAS free, although, guitar-GAS free for years until I bought two last year.

My GAShole has been plugged by several looming home improvements (windows and siding are expensive) and a C/O in the wings. The fact that there are so many really good, drool-worthy guitars - just on here - makes it a lot tougher.

A few years after our daughter was born I sold all my recording equipment to the now bassist in my band. We've been recording some demos, so he's brought a good bit of it back over to my house where we practice.  Now I've got the recording bug again. Good preamps and microphones are singing their siren song to me.

Too bad I just dropped seven large on a new HVAC for my mom's house, which we own.

Jeezus...you've sold FORTY guitars, have dozens left and you still want more?

Learn to enjoy your prosperity, Mr. Wealthy-Retired Boomer. You have it better than most ever will.

So..you think the GAS is gone do ya?  django49 your own words will doom your noble intentions.

GAS is a cancer that is never totally cured even with surgery (aka thinning the herd) nor radiation nor chemo.  Its been in your DNA since you learned G-C-D.  Even fracking will not get GAS out of your system. Trust me.  I've been thru GAS Detox several times in the last 20+/-years or so.  I've been clean now for about 8yrs, although I almost got caught up in the arms of a buxom, korina, 3 breasted, hottie.  There's always another one just around the next corner.

GAS recidivism rate is 96%, 100% if you hold on to a couple guits for "sentimental reasons".  Everybody knows you're just cracking the door open so you can make a silent exit to have a smoke or go down to your local GC "just to have a look around".

Best of luck to ya django49.  I truly hope you break bonds.  If you are having a moment of weekness call me anytime of the day or night.  I'll pull you back from the ledge.  Come to the next meeting with me of Gear O-holics.  Its in the undercroft of St.Timothy's Catholic Church.

Just don't tell 'em yer jewish Wang

Stick a fork in him, he's done. Pack his bags for rehab, we all know the address.

Welcome to The Gear GAS California.  it plays like buttah.  When I buy this one I'll need no other.  I called up the Captain (& Tenniele too!) Please bring me my korina.  He said we haven't had that wood here since Fender slit our throats.

Arm of Hamer my friend, you can checkout any time you like but you can never leave.  Â saluti!

Fuck. There are always amps . And now that I am neck deep into recording my music.. there are amps, mids,  preamps, compressors, eqs, racks, plugins etc.,etc.

But guitar-wise I am happy and done.......I have 6 electrics, one lap steel, and one acoustic...,all bases covered....yet I am considering selling 3 guitars and one or two amps to fund another Shish..... I dunno.....

I have recently decided that there aren't any more guitars that I need. I own 26 electrics and 6 acoustics. I perform about four times a month and usually pull the same four.

For a number of years I have had a savings account named "guitar savings". Any money that I make from performances goes in that account and when there's $1500 or so, I buy a Hamer.

Next April I will turn 60 years old. I have decided that I want a Harley Road King. So the savings account is getting re-named to Harley Savings and I am going to stash what I can to hopefully pull the trigger cash on a big bike next spring.

GAS has had it's grip on me for decades, but there really isn't anything else that I want that I don't have.

But I did just take delivery of a Phantom Custom last yeek, so.............I am truly full of shit.

I only have three electrics, all Hamers, and I think that's one guitar too much for me. Being only a hobbyist guitarist, I don't need more guitars. I'm also done buying pedals. If I ever buy anything else, it'll probably be a small, portable modeling amp to replace my Roland Cube that seems to sound a bit fried as of late. I won't be replacing my Deuxe Reverb, so I'm good on a tube amp.

Nowadays, I like "looking," but I'm done buying guitars.
