zorrow
It’s certainly cool! No, I hadn’t heard of them. I recognize there Jeff Scott Soto, Billy Sheehan and Mike Portnoy. The keyboardist maybe is Derek Sherinian, but I’m not 100% sure. And the guitarist suddenly looked to me like Jim Matheos when he sang, but it shouldn’t be —he looks younger than Matheos, moves a lot on the stage and shreds big time (and Matheos doesn’t do either). Who’s that guy?

I’ve heard of him but barely know anything about him. I do know however his nickname is “Bumblefoot” and that he plays fretless guitars sometimes. I’ve also listened to some of his solo stuff, but I don’t really remember the impression it caused to me. Need to (re)do my homework there. 5 minutes ago, gtrdaddy said: I sure hope this isn’t the end of The Winery Dogs! Sheehan and Portnoy with Kotzen kicked ass in that band. Those guys are into so many projects! I also hope The Winery Dogs isn’t done. Kotzen not only plays, but also sings up there with the bests. On the same vein, Sherinian played in Black Country Communion and I heard they were back together. Hope they will stay together for some time more. I like that kind of British bluesy hard rock quite a bit.

scottcald
I like the song. What's with the double neck mania? Is that their gimmick? In the YT comments someone asked why the vocalist didn't have two mics. Interesting to me that Sheehan isn't doing any singing. I know he's done a bunch in past projects. LucSulla
I really enjoyed this single when I first heard it, but the album suffers the same problem all modern rock and metal seems to have. Start tangent here - It's all mastered with so little dynamic range that it's like pounding your head with a sonic hammer through most of the album. It literally puts me to sleep even if I like the music. Granted, this is really clean and sounds great by the song, but the album really is at 11 the whole time. I wouldn't say it is smashed like some other albums (Looking at you Californication, Vapor Trails, and Death Magnetic) , but it doesn't have much dynamic range. I don't blame the musicians for this, but mastering everything right to 0 dBFS and keeping the whole album there just kills albums for me. Even if they shake things up with instrumentation, it's all the same dB coming out, so as far as a brain is concerned, everything is as loud as everything else. This is also the reason I started listening to NPR and talk radio around 2002, which morphed into a serious podcast addiction 10 years later. All my new music was making me fall asleep on car trips, while the dynamic range of spoken media kept me awake. I really dug some of the tunes on this album, but I ended up switching back over to a podcast for that very reason while I was checking it out about a month ago. Just 6 dB of dynamic range... that's all I'm asking, haha. Anyway, weird place to go, I know. But I was really annoyed by it because I really like some of these songs. Years ago JohnnyB gave us a technical explanation of the difference between the dynamics mastering in the era of vinyl and modern day mastering. The old albums had excitement. mathman
Most music created commercially today is listened to in high noise environment. Wearing headphones in public, busy roads in cars , stores, etc. in those situations dynamics means either it is too quiet to hear some parts or it suddenly blasts your ears. The way we used to listen to music in a room meant you could hear the dynamics. It seems music is meant to stay louder than any background noise. Listening in a quiet environment is not the norm I guess.

I didn’t mean they sound like The Who, just that I hear a similarity... specifically at 2:40, which reminded me of ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’. No, you are right in that they do not sound like The Who, just more of a modernized similarity at a moment in time.

Its the synth intro, 2nd cousin on yo mama's side from the intro to Baba O'Riley. its close enough for some of the "Led Zep lawsuit" atty's to try to make a case. Then "damn I bet those are heavy" and then "wow, I'm getting kind of dizzy from the spinning camera". The music falls into the same category as Winery Dogs and KXM for me. Wanna like it, love the musicians, wanna support them, but the music doesn't catch me the way I wish it did.

Thankfully, they are beginning to subside due to quirks with YouTube. Everything louder than everything else mastering is somewhat useless on the platform, which also happens to be the largest music service in the world by quite a bit. Those bands need a Matthew Sweet or Dave Grohl or someone who knows how to write a good pop song. They are all muscle and technicality without any hooks.
