Time + soldering iron + pickups + plus a Standard Bass

Recommended Posts

So I was going through the parts bins and found my original X2N pickups for #0531.

I also have a red X2N that might have been previously owned by one of the Matthes brothers.

Ive got 2 pit bulls and one X2N in there now.

Each one is wired parallel and each has its own volume.

Im bored and I was thinking about either replacing the remaining X2N with a pit bull, or replacing the

two pitbulls with the original X2N’s.

Then its a matter of wiring series or parallel.

What would You all do?

I'd put it back to stock. The X2N's have a certain, stupid rawness that sound great in basses.

You know, that’s about as accurate a description as can be said about the X2N.

Thats what the middle one sounds like compared to the neck and bridge pit bulls.

And it’s louder too.

I do dig the X2Ns and wish those had been stock in more Hamer basses.  I'm thinking about finally ditching the EMGs I can't stand in one of my Hamers and slapping a set of those in there.

That being said, if you decide to move the PitBulls, let me know. ;)

Curious: a DiMarzio X2N guitar humbucker was stock in some of the basses? Wow!

cmatthes- if you’re replacing emg’s (P style? J style?) wouldn’t that require routing? Curious to know what bass you’re modifying.

interesting stuff - inquiring minds want to know!

(I apologize if this seems a tangent, and will gladly delete or re-post as another thread if so. Just genuinely curious! Thanks)

Yeah early basses had anything from Gibson Thunderbird P/U’s (#0001) to dual Jbass and Gibson EB3 baby humbucker to custom wound Bill Lawrence (Quad Bass), then I’m guessing 1980 or 81 they started using the Dimarzio X2N and just a little later the Dimarzio model G.

The original ones in mine have a black plastic base with a “patent applied for” sticker.

Im assuming that the X2N might have started production around 1980 the earliest.

as far as Chris goes, I Do know he has a B4M, and that has EMG humbuckers in it, so there wouldn’t be any routing.

I just changed out the pickups yesterday.

The pitbulls and the middle X2N were wired parallel, and I retired everything series this time around.

So it’s back to its original setup.

I love the X2Ns in bass... and yes- Hamer used the guitar version, and not the X2NB bass pickup which emerged later (different animals - behemoths, by comparison)

The Model G pickup in my B4S below is the bass equivalent of the original X2N.  I think it is pretty much identical, with exception of the poles vs. blades.  Sounds that way, anyhow...

Best of both worlds :) (EMG swap):

Done!

The neck and bridge are the original PAF X2N’s

The middle one is the X2N that I added in 1981.

Interestingly, the pots are date coded from 1980.

I Did order it in late 1980, so maybe those were left over from then.

That’s really cool!

How is it actually wired? No switches, three volumes? Do tell!

Geoff:

Each X2N is in humbucker mode (series).

Each pickup has its own volume.

I ordered it in late 1980 not even knowning  it had a specific name, just that I wanted a transparent red explorer shape.

I ordered it with a red Calzone case flight case

It originally came in with (2) X2N pickups - 1-neck, 1-bridge.

Wiring was humbucker mode, 2 Volume, 1 tone.

I never use the tone control and I needed more mids, so I added the middle X2N not long after received it.
