This is exactly my issue with them. It’s like someone is behind the scenes telling them to ape EXACTLY some iconic rock moments. GVF, please use your influences and create YOUR sound. Robert Plant nailed it in his interview above. It’s almost...almost like a tribute band. I know they are capable of more...

FGJ
I totally respect what GVF is trying to do, but that singer's voice is like nails on a chalkboard to my ears, and the band as a whole is no LZ. Still, it is nice to hear someone playing rock. I almost feel sorry for kids wanting to be rock stars in today's media-glutted internet climate, because it seems like those days of rising above the crowds is gone. One's competition is no longer the other band playing the local clubs. Now, one's competition is the entire planet of people with the ability to showcase their talent on YouTube, with a bazillion new videos of content uploaded every day. Honestly, if GVF didn't create a buzz by sounding like Zepplin, does anyone think they would have gotten that t.v. spot? Still, while the record industry is all but dead, those guys can at least make a few bucks touring before the fickle public drops them for the next new thing. I hope they learn to invest well rather than living like, well, like rock stars, because it probably won't last.
Jakeboy
I don’t think they will fade away....I believe they will develop their own sound and will continue to sell music....I think there is such a void of guitar based “classic” type rock out there...new stuff I mean, that people are desperate for it. I know I am. That’s what Petty’s death hurt so bad. He was still cranking out great guitar music that rocked. I am finding some killer new soul music out there....but we do need more rock and rollers. ‘The industry is not what it was and GVF is living the dream in spite of that fact. I guess I just fear it is because of the Zep rip. I still play the ep because the guitar tones sound soooo good. FWIW, I hated KWS at first too. He has matured into his own sound now and I dig what he does in bluesland. Except when he plays an SRV song.....

Jakeboy
Ironically enough, while I was playing the new GVF song above in this thread, my wife heard it. I said “Do you hearthe Zeppelin rip-off?” She said “Yeah, I like it”. I was floored. Then today while putzing around in the garage with speakers or a soldering iron or something, I hear Alexa start playing some heavy rocker. I come in and my wife had Alexa start playing GVF! She is a rocker like me, but I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. That is an acid test that GVF passed with flying colors. My better half is not into any current RNR, and for her to not only comment on it, but actually start playing it without prodding by me, tells me I need to reconsider my harsh opinion of these boys..... I was so inspired, I spent the afternoon jamming 0006 into a Marshall pushed by a treble booster. Glorious!

Disturber
I really dig that the are not covered with "cool" rock tattoos from the nearest 7/11 tattoo parlour - as seen on tv i last weeks LA Ink. When did you last see a young rock band member with totally clean arms? Give this band one or two more albums and they will find their own style. Then they will totally rule. (Hopefully.) tommy p
Wow! I just listened to the live version of When the Curtain Falls from the Fallon show. The singer's voice sounded ragged out compared to all their recorded work and I didn't like it at all. He'd better watch himself before he loses it completely. I think much of the rich quality of his voice recorded is "studio" work. He sounds thinner and more like Geddy Lee trying to sing Zep. I'm going to listen to some other live stuff before I pass judgment.

LucSulla
I don't dig them that much, but not for any particular highfalutin reason. They just don't grab me in any particular way. However, if they get some kids back into bands, that's great. Rising tide, all boats, and so on. However, the singer definitely needs to get some vocal training if he hasn't, and it doesn't sound like he has. Not because he's bad - quite the opposite. I thought the Fallon performance was really good, but you can just kinda hear it. If he learned how to take care of it now, he'd probably get a lot of miles out of it thought. That Black Coffee band is my thing, btw. I bought that album.
LucSulla
Worth a sample - fun album: Whoever posted their video a couple of months ago here got me into them, but I forgot about it until @Ed Rechts posted it again. It wears 70s, 80s, and 90s hard rock on its sleeve without sounding totally derivative in my opinion. https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/blackcoffee3

The song is a good song, and I like it more the more I listen to it, but I’ll have to see how the studio stuff sounds before I pass them off. The vocals I heard on the Fallon show were raucous and annoying, and I couldn’t list to more than about one song. It made me think of an annoying little bird bitching for food or something. Jakeboy
I dig the BC cover of AC/DC and I really need to check out Big Hat...they got the Georgia Satellites kickin’ Southern rock thing going on...let’s just hope they never devolve into bro-country. princeofdarkness56
I’m curious. Do the folks that have a negative opinion on the lead singers vocals feel the same way about the lead singer for the Darkness ? Because his vocals are a deal breaker for me with that band. I’m hard pressed to recall a more annoying singer to front a pretty decent band.
