  1. Ok, so full disclosure, when I was younger I was stupid, and didn't really know how to correctly mount speakers in a cabinet (rear mounted), so I just kept cranking own on the bolts until the frame was just about touching the baffle. Yes I know this is not the way. I took out all of those speakers years later and then let them sit unmounted for a month for the gaskets to "recover", however the foam gaskets never really came back that much. They are mounted again and there definitely is about 1mm of space between the frame and the baffle, but I wonder if maybe the gaskets should be replaced or shimmed, and if that is even possible. I can find gaskets everywhere online, but I don't want to screw up my speakers, which are some Eminence Texas Heat 16s that are nice and broken in now.
  2. I can't even find past listings for a purple one coming up for sale. I found lots of old listings for the White and Blue versions. Also some for the ESP strat types from the 1990s. Now part of me is wondering how the pickup set works if the middle and neck aren't slanted. I also noticed that the ESP version has the pickup spacing slightly different from the Charvel.
  3. Hammond transformers are definitely quality. I'm honestly still baffled by how Magnetic Components / Marvel Electronics went under so suddenly. They were making tons of transformers, and with the pandemic lots of people were ordering amp kits. Glad you like it! It's a fantastic amp. So well thought out.
  4. ARGH. I've never been inside a marshall cab before. All my Carvin cabs were well made, with T-nuts and such. Later on though I think they just were drilling directly into the wood for some cabinets. Good luck!
  5. Sweet! I hope you enjoy them! I'm probably gonna put my order in tomorrow or so.
  6. This really makes me want to get a set of them, just for that SOUND. I am mostly a home player, and I play bass in bands. Having a cab that can be mic'd easily is not really a goal of mine.
  7. Yeah... I love it even more when people are like "gasp", how can you play a guitar with ONLY 22 frets? How can you play a bass guitar with "only" 20 frets like a Jazz Bass?
  8. I think that the blue burst and purple burst when they original came out in the late 1980s, so I don't know if it pre-dates that or not. But it is a nice pickup. I was looking at the string gauges that Jake used, and later I see 010, 014, 018, 028, 040, 052, which is like a 10 heavy bottom set, but I also see 009; .012; .017; .026; .036; and .048 from earlier. I've never tried the .0095s, but this may be the time to check them out. I hope the nut can take 10s... lately I've had a few guitars that came with 9-42 sets that couldn't take the lower strings without having the nut adjusted. Now, I was kinda torn between the OG Lee, which has a slightly wider neck, but one less fret. Both have the truss rod nut on the neck pocket end, so that's not a real difference. I could honestly see myself getting both. I really like how this pickup setup sounds.
  9. I am so far! The neck is probably about the size of a Diablo neck or a bit smaller, so it's a bit narrower than some, also narrower than the So-Cal USA and Pro-Mod Jake E Lee guitars. I'll have to compare it to some other guitars. It's not like wizard thin, but I think it's about 2mm narrower at the nut than a wizard. We'll see how it works out in the long run once I get it really set up the way I like it. Now the big question: stick with the .009s on it, or go to the .010s I usually use.
  10. The forte replicas have always been tempting, especially since I have been so happy with the open back Traditional 2x12s I have from Avatar. The 3D aspect is really fascinating, and they do remind me of the vertical 2x12s that Mesa used to make with the EVM12L in the bottom and a C90 in the top. I think they are only 22 inches wide at the top though, so it would really depend on what heads I wanted to put on it. I only have a few heads, and most would be too wide to fit on top of the 22 inch wide end.
  11. I run some through headphones when I use my little Yamaha amp, but when I had a Carvin stereo rig, I just never used it. I've never really had effects as a part of my sound. I pretty much just use overdrive and reverb. Since I also have so many combos, I think if I did decide to run stereo, I'd just use those, rather than using a stereo cab. Still, it's nice to have the ability to run stereo, if I want to.
  12. I'm still going through my Jake E. Lee phase, and also my superstrat phase, so this should be no surprise. I have always wanted another SSH to replace the EBMM Luke III I had, or still have somewhere, but finding one that is set up so that the volumes aren't vastly different is hard. I remember @LucSulla saying that the pickup set was very balanced on his Jake E Lee in Lavender Pearl, and then I noticed that the Music Zoo in Long island (about 1.5 hours away) had one in stock that was "used excellent", so I went to check it out. The pickup set is slightly different on this guitar, being that the JB in the bridge has an Alnico II magnet instead of an A5, but the rest of the setup is the same. I'm not sure how the neck compares, but I like it, and it's got a nice shape. Now some may say "Dave, you hate guitars with gold hardware, so wtf?". Well the bridge and jack plate aren't gold, they are brass. The rest of the hardware is black, and the finish is just a beautiful color. Sure it's not translucent or sparkly, but this reminds me a lot of the old "blueburst" that EBMM used on some guitars in the late 80s, including the early Steve Morse guitars, before they switched to a translucent finish. It plays VERY well, I'm just on the fence about keeping the .009-.042 strings on it, or going to the .010-46 I usually use. The sound is great, and once I get the setup exactly where I want it, it's gonna be great. Now if only the weather had been great. Holy crap people do not know how to drive in heavy rain / almost whiteout conditions.
  13. One of the options for the avatar 2x12s is the multi-jack plate like that. I'm mainly thinking about whether I want the overall impedance when using both speakers to be 16 or 8 ohms. I have two other Avatar cabinets, both open back. One is 8 ohms with two 16 ohm Texas Heats with a standard "through" jack, and the other is a Multi-jack with two 8 ohm speakers. I'm just thinking more of whether an 8 ohm cab or a 16 / 4 ohm cab would work better with my heads and combos. Almost all of my combos are set up with 8 ohm loads, so 8 ohms would work better if I wanted to stick them on top. On the other hand if I am just going to use this cabinet with heads, having 16 ohms available does add more possibilities, and also I could run it stereo... though I never run anything stereo. I just like the multi-jack due to the 4 / 16 ohm capability.
  14. Ok, so I'm thinking about getting an Avatar G212 Contemporary, with the closed back. I have two Open Back 2x12s, but really wanted something for a bit harder stuff with more of a tight low end. Question is, what to put in it? Avatar has a bunch of "Avatar" branded stuff, probably made by Eminence, and probably very close to speakers they already make. They also have Fane speakers, which you don't see much over here, and they also still have the Avatar / Fane M65, which is supposed to pretty much be a tweaked Creamback 65 kind of sound. I'm kind of leaning towards those. Then I guess, I need to think about whether I want a 16 ohm cab loaded with 8 ohm speakers, or an 8 ohm cab loaded with 16 ohm speakers. I have heard that speakers of different impedance sound different. Some speaker makers, like Eminence, make mostly 8 ohm speakers, with some 16 ohm varieties, mostly depending on popularity. Then you have Mesa Boogie, who wants all of their enclosures to be 8 ohm total impedance, and simply uses whatever combination of speakers achieves that, like how Marshall seems to always wants 16 ohms.
  15. Ted McCarty was a brilliant man, whose influence on the guitar industry can hardly be overstated. However, every great design stands on the shoulders of a bunch of bad ones. The Flying V was great, the Futura was ok but made much better with the Explorer. The Moderne... there's a reason they kept it on the drawing board for 25 years. This one should have stayed a drawing.
