  1. This was the first Hamer I remember seeing in magazines, and most notably, prominently featured in the collage of the “At Budokan” album gatefold. Since Rick pretty much retired it from the road in 1980-81, I never got to see it played onstage, despite seeing it up close and personal in Rockford. On Thursday night I got to check out the Nielsen Trust with the fantastic Nick Perri and the Underground Thieves opening. Nick Perri actually had more guitars onstage than Rick did, as Rick is just taking out his main ‘50s Burst that has been on every album since 1977, a 59 Reissue and #0000.

  4. Thanks to @topekatj’s advice I just received and installed a Mojoaxe lightning wraparound. Originally I thought the regular compensated was close enough for rock n roll but this one definitely keeps the guitar more in tune! It ‘might’ be a tad brighter sounding (not a bad thing) but it could also be the new strings. Digging the Eclipse!

  5. I’m back in the fold with a 1995 Eclipse. I got this in a local sale from our very own Jellyfish about a month or so ago. A true gentleman, super easy deal. He had it refinish by Pat Wilkins (beauty) and did some additional work, too, so I thought it would make a cool project. Ahh ... it has that nice mid nineties medium large neck shape and a great acoustic sound. I had an Eclipse years ago that I liked but never got into the stock pickups. This new guitar would get some mods:) Here we have an Ivory Eclipse, Fralin mini hums, Mojo compensated wraparound bridge, with other nickel/silver appointments. I also darkened the fingerboard a little bit. It’s a really nice rosewood board so I didn’t go ebony. Just a couple of shades darker trans mahogany. It’s not perfect but pretty damn close. The mini hums are a slightly different size than the firebirds so they needed their own surrounds. I can see a little evidence of the change in a couple of places at the edges of the surrounds. Minor for sure. So far I can’t find a silver toggle tip that is perfect. This one is a little too shallow, so it doesn’t screw all the way down. There are a few threads exposed and perhaps it looks a bit long. Again, pretty minor. Overall it looks killer and it sounds amazing! Mini hums are unique in that, to my ear, they sound like a PAF crossed with a Strat pickup. They have beef and warmth but with a little hollow sound. The bridge is wound to balance well with the neck. No Achilles heel. All in this project cost me under $1100. Not only is it a great value for a guitar of this quality but it’s the perfect Eclipse - for me. Fugly? You’re koo koo:)

  8. UPDATE—- it was @pirateflynnto the rescue! The Sylvania set he sent me is JUST PERFECT in my Tophat Supreme 16. I just mailed the Telefunkens back as they were too hifi, just like @pirateflynnsaid they would be. The Syls have the chime and crunch an AC15 type needs. In freaking spades.

  10. It’s been a really incredible run of fantastic instruments from one of the best (and my personal favorite) in the biz. I’m honored to own and play some of his guitars, but more importantly, to have him as a really great friend.

  11. This is the guitar that got me into Hamers. I fell in love the first time I saw it after opening the cd of Gary Hoey’s Animal Instinct to read the liner notes. In fact, when I picked up my 94 Mirage in the guitar store to try it out before buying it, I busted out the opening riff of Gary’s Hocus Pocus cover on it... 🤭 I am a little color blind so I have a hard time distinguishing between some of the subtleties of the different Hamer bursts. I always thought it was a 59 burst but the more I look at it, the less sure I am. Also, if there are any of these early 90’s sunburst archtops/Archtop studios with medium to large neck carves, it’s going on my “want” list. A FAT neck, bound body, unbound dot neck would top that list... Any help? Thanks in advance.

  17. They’re not from the Nielsen run, because those were all black & white checkerboard, but they may have had to order a few from TKL as a minimum order later on. I recall somebody ordering an indigo Mahogany one in the mid-2000s, so it may be leftover stock from that era?

  24. Yeah, this is a nice guitar! @ArnieZ @cmatthes I used a MINWAX stain marker in dark walnut. It seemed like the right color and density from the available samples. Dark but not black. They have ebony if you’d like to take it further. It worked like a charm. Draw it on just like a marker and wipe it down. I didn’t leave it on long, maybe a couple of minutes. It came right off the position markers, nut, and binding. It’s a little tacky afterwards but I buffed it with a soft cloth until it was slick. The end result is a beautiful deep brown with a reddish hue.

  26. I got these a long time ago at the factory, I believe they were extras once the number of guitars to be built was met. Probably not a lot of demand for these out there, but figured this would be the place to find useful homes for them. They are basically NOS. They are different sizes on the outside. One measure 17 3/4"X53X 4 1/4"", the other is slightly larger at 19"X54X 4 1/2". $50.00 each and actual shipping. I'd hate to just chuck them, as they are in perfect condition and deserve useful homes. If nothing else, a cool collector's item from days gone by! 🙂

  38. Tele-shaped 'Bird body looking good so far in grabber blue and semigloss black. This is intentionally going to be an imperfect finish so that it doesn't clash with the vibe of the weathered hardware. Waiting on the finish to cure a bit more and for the "BOSS 429" decal to arrive. I'll attach the Coastal Customs neck and the half-bridge (thanks, Dave!) at that point to make sure everything still lines up properly post-paint. I love a summer project...

  43. Thanks for the references above. I've seen Parklane on FB - great looking necks. I wasn't aware of the history there w/Musikraft. I'll scope out Coastal and KGC as well. I'm a few months into a Musikraft neck order for the blue body below. I had missed out on the pictured '82 Charvel parts guitar last year, sulked for a while... and later decided to clone it in the name of science (mwahaha!). In parallel, I am having a bound flametop body made (dual hum prepro clone w/vintage trem). I would ante up for an original neck for that project if heel size and general specs were a good fit. More than likely that hunt will continue, though, and I'll end up having a neck built for it.
