Liquidating my collection, and staring with some super rare hard to find Dr Z Amps. These two are super early Hand Wired by Dr Z Himself in his basement shop. First up is “Little Red” this is the earliest Carmen Ghia build you will find. Made from Hammond Reverb Chassis, old iron, all brand new Glass. $1350 https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/dr-z-carmen-ghia-hammond-chassis.2645483/ Next is an early 90’s SRZ-65R. This is a Reverb Head, Doc based these on the JCM800 but Handwired, and tube rectified. $1600 https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/dr-z-srz-65r-large-box-90s.2645475/8 points

Box arrived on the day it was supposed to. UPS packing consisted of running a roll of bubble wrap around the amp twice. Nothing to protect the sides (beyond the amp cover provided by the seller). Nothing to keep amp from moving around front-to-back in the box. There probably was extra space between the bubble wrap and the top of the box but I didn't pay too much attention. (And no "this side up" warning or anything like that.) Now the good news. The amp looks great cosmetically and the power light came on. I was concerned when there was no sound initially but dummy me forgot that tube amps have to warm up. 7:30 am in an apartment so I didn't do a deeper dive and that's all I've got! Those of you who are familiar w/3 Monkeys amps feel free to reply with tips 😀.6 points

I have the Q52, I dig it. Actually bought it because we were talking about headless guitars here on HFC, and I was probably bored on a 24 hour shift so I started perusing thru GC.com used stuff. The pups were just ok on mine, and I don't like 5 ways switches because when I'm singing and playing and I go to swap pups I often wind up in the wrong position, ha. I had my tech swap it all out w/ DiMarzios & a 3 way switch. If you need a gigbag there are 32" gun bags on amazon that work great Amazon.com: DULCE DOM 32/36/42/48/52 inch Double Rifle Case Soft Bag Gun Case, Perfect for Rifle Pistol Firearm Storage and Transportation, All Around Shooting Range Tactical Rifle Backpack, Indoor Outdoor : Sports & Outdoors6 points

When you say "UPS packing" do you mean a UPS store franchise? In my experience UPS Stores are shit and they're apparently not even capable of packing something to meet UPS requirements for claims. Glad everything worked out.5 points

All of the above... Paring down. Home players do not need large amps. Some guys are playing out less. That does not apply to everybody, but a significant number of us will be making decisions on what to keep more and more over the next decade.3 points

What kills me is the history they just dumpstered. Business decision or not, that was shortsighted, ignorant, and cruel.3 points

So since May 2011, more years than not, I've led a study abroad program in Europe for a month. I started taking a guitar with me in 2014, a baby Taylor. Unfortunately, that guitar started falling apart in the last few years, and since I like it a lot, I stopped taking it on trips. Last year, I bought a Blackstar Carry On. It's actually not a bad little guitar, but it is a little guitar. I also found myself getting into more situations where people wanted me to sit in on stuff when I had an electric, but I never could for obvious reasons. The Carry On is a fine guitar for noodling, but it's not something you'd really want to play seriously. It kinda keeps your callouses hard, but because of the short scale, strings just feel like rubber bands. So it was better than nothing - a lot better to be honest - but It still wasn't a real guitar though. I saw an Ibanez Q54 for pretty cheap and decided to give it a shot. Believe it or not, it's a super cool guitar. The neck is great. I've never owned an Indonesian guitar, but I'm happy that the good things I hear about Ibanez's Indo production are true. Pickups are solid too. Pretty good for high gain stuff and fantastic for cleans. It's actually a tad smaller in length that the baby Taylor even with the full 25.5" neck. Overall, the gig back is about the same width and length, but quite a bit slimmer. I never had a problem throwing the Taylor in an overhead, and I suspect this one will be even easier. Plus the last two inches or so of the gig bag can be folded over. Overall, happily surprised with this guitar. I'd be 100% fine taking it to a real gig. I'm really excited to have a real instrument to play for a month this time around.3 points

There is still l lot of new gear being sold. Would be interesting how much is high dollar versus cheap, maybe most is cheap. A a generation moves to their golden years, how much of what they perceive as valuable will be viewed the same by younger generations? Les Paul's, Strats, Teles seem to stay popular. Not sure how widely Marshall Stacks will remain as popular. With modern PA systems you don't need more than 15-25 watts, and then there are the modeler devices The sheer number of guitars and amps in circulation and being built may end up causing price declines Hamers may hold value since bands like Cheap Trick remain well known and they are high quality. They have certainly done well since I bought mine used in 2013. That was past the tree-fiddy era.2 points

If what I've read and heard said about the state of live music in bars/pubs and like venues is true, I could see a sell off of sorts occurring. I'm still trying to make a go of playing in a cover unit and as such, I'm still holding on to all my PA and gig rigs. But I could definitely see unloading about a half dozen guitars and all the PA gear once that endeavor dies out.2 points

I have a three holer in black that's bound, with bartolini pickups. Very cool guitars! Nice and light, I believe the upper half is hollow, as you sit playing. I believe the piezo acoustic pickups and active electronics are from Ovation of that same era and you can play it that way or just fully electric or blend the two together as you see fit! Two separate output jacks so you could run an acoustic amp and a regular amp. Or various combinations to a PA or digital equipment modeling or whatever. Super versatile! I often play unplugged around the house and this isn't as loud as a full acoustic guitar but louder than a solid body. Plus. It's so lightweight that it's a favorite to just pickup and play like that. I had to be careful on how I worded this post as saying... I spent my lunch hour with my bound black 3 holer and returned to work completely satisfied! might have come across a little weird! 😉2 points

Yeah... I'm not feeling it. It needs the chrome control plate to make it not look like a toilet bowl seat.2 points

Many years ago, our next door neighbor got a new puppy. Put it outside where the poor thing must have missed his momma and spent the whole night howling and whimpering under our bedroom window. After a while, I set my Super Reverb on a chair and aimed it out the window toward their house, plugged in a mic and started barking and howling like a rabid wolf. Poor little thing was still hiding on the far side of their yard when they came out to get him the next morning. True story, inspired by a Mickey Newbury recording......2 points

Cool amp. I had a Sock Money 12" that I should not have sold. Came at a time in my life where I really didn't understand how to get what I wanted out of an amp if it wasn't pretty high gain to begin with. Great amp that I just wasn't experienced enough to understand.2 points

$2,500 Shipped - How about $2,300 shipped. At this price, I'd really prefer a F&F payment. This Talladega is in very good shape, especially the top. There is some minor scuffing on the rear that is hard to photograph. It is smooth to the touch. The frets are unworn. It's a fairly light guitar being chambered at 7.8 pounds. The neck is a very comfortable fat soft V, 0.90" thick at the 1st fret and 0.98" at the 12th fret. Includes the original Hamer branded case and Certificate of Authenticity. This ‘69 Princeton Reverb was at an independent music store. Didn’t break the bank. It looks as if it was just set aside for years. Really dusty. Had a replacement speaker, which I’ve replaced. It was all original except the power cord, speaker and 2 tubes. 5 of 7 tubes were original RCAs with ‘67 & ‘68 date codes. Has all nos RCAs in it now. I sent the chassis off and had it serviced. Cleaned all the dust bunnies out of the cabinet & cleaned the tolex. Just finished reassembling it and am getting acquainted with it. I had briefly posted pics of it in the “ask the experts” when I was looking for a tech. Apologies if you’ve seen it before. But this time it’s functional. Sorry for the crummy phone pics. Any love for the PR?1 point

Yep. I've had plenty of people send me stuff they had packed at their nearest UPS store, usually terrible.1 point

Any idea what that last bit could mean? My guess is that they will partner with Guitar Center and use GC as the drop off location. Alternately, UPS stores.1 point

Same size as a Special and typically pretty light - 6-7 lbs - and the electronics can be run separately. Too bad it's a goldtop. Would it be blasphemy to paint it?1 point

It was packed/shipped from a UPS store and I can't disagree with your assessment!1 point

GEEZ.................Apparently "Lightening Joe's Guitar Heaven" STILL has this Studio Custom for sale and no wonder, what a price. This guitar was listed on the website back when I joined the HFC back in 2012! Cool guitar though. Hamer Studio Custom (2007) Trans White | Reverb1 point

put object in heavy plastic trash bag. have box just a bit bigger. squirt line of spray foam in box. install object. might let that cure... then squirt more foam on each surface. don't use too much. if it is something really precious, consider a cooler instead of a box1 point

It depends on what kind of music you play. And if is the P90 or humbucker version. The tone chamber can make the P90's sound fatter in a good way. For himbuckers I think it matters less. If you play harder rock or metal definitely go with the studio. They sound tighter and meaner. f you play more classic rock or pop the Artist can make more sense. If you play loud. Especially loud with gain the studio makes more sense. But the P90 Artist loves it loud too. If you play at normal rehearsal or studio levels the Artist is fun as the tone chamber gives a humbucker guitar a little more air. Good with Fender type of amps. If you are a bedroom noodler it makes no difference at all, you won't notice the tone chamber. As for changing you nut to graphtech I don't think it matters much. Hamer's lubricate nuts are very good. Gibson used nylon nuts back in 59, no one complains about the tone of old Les Pauls. I think much of these so called upgrades are snake oil. I bought a used Hamer with a Callaham bridge, swapped back to the original Schaller and it sounded better to my ears. Hamer knew what they were doing.1 point
