  1. No prob: Below the waistline, angle the neck up, rest the right forearm on the wing and you're in biz. Beauty guitar, Geoff. Every rock guitarist needs at least one V/Explorer/Standard/etc. in their lineup.
  2. You should give the V another chance. The key to living with a V is to play with the strap until you find the perfect angle. IMO, Vs/Explorers are the most comfortable guitars, ever. Yep, Hamer makes a superior V/Explorer. I also like Navigator (ESP) '76 reissue Explorers. Gibson, though, seems to have been making some nice stuff in the last 8 years or so... I had a Hamer korina Standard which was a log. Heavy as hell, but sounded/recorded killer. My impression of korina guitars is that they have an upper-mid spike which really cuts through. My current Standard weighs at just under 8lbs and is a joy to play. It's getting a bone nut/TonePros as we speak and I'm chompin' at the bit, LOL! I'm not sure if Explorers have a "signature sound", like LPs/Teles/Strats, but I've found many V's have a certain sound/feel that I can't really put into words. They really excel for rhythm guitar and have a great lead tone. I don't know if it's the body shape or the long headstock...
  3. Rainbow: Live in Munich 1977. Really good! Blackmore's playing is snotty/brilliant, as usual. Cozy Powell, too. AC/DC: Plug Me In (Deluxe Edition). A lot of rare footage, I just wish the editors would have sequenced the discs a bit more logically. Japan footage from the 'BIB' tour is crushing...
  4. Given the circumstances, I would say the above is a good way to handle the sitch. If you're doing all the heavy lifting, and this jag can't even muster the energy to remember lyrics, seems like he should be cut loose, especially if the band is doing well and you're cultivating more high-profile gigs. Playing music is supposed to be enjoyable, made moreso if you can make some extra cash doing it. Don't let this pisher ruin everything you've worked for all this time. Tough love, baby!
  5. atquinn has a new, Floyd-ed Studio Custom that has a thicker-than-normal body, though I've no idea if it is similar to an LP's depth. For a price, Hamer'll make you anything. Except, of course, a Les Paul.

  7. Possibly. The few times I've seen Ted he's used (exclusively) Gibson Byrdlands. They are, as you stated, fully hollow. Add to the Byrdlands six cranked Fender Twins atop six Dual Showman cabs (2x18") cabs and you're pushing a lot of air! I don't recall him using any stomboxes back in the day, so the distortion he was using was all power tube overdrive. The volume onstage must have been unbearable. Later on he used a maple Howard Roberts Fusion, a vintage 'burst LP and an assortment of PRS'. Not a big fan of his current, super-gainy solidbody tone. But, "Double Live Gonzo", yeesh! Ya gotta give it up to someone who took the time/effort to be able to use that rig at that volume...
  8. Dear god! White Sister! I remember those guys, I think I used to have their indy LP. Kind of a poor man's Angel (better, though). 707, IIRC, was a NoCal band from Sonoma, Santa Rosa or something like that. They had a slick, AOR sound ala Journey.
  9. Late 80's SF bands: Jackson Saints (feat. Janis Tanaka, bassist for Pink) Osgood Slaughter (actually a bit similar to LSD, great band) Big Star: coulda been huge, but bad luck/timing destroyed them. Sad story... Swiss metalers Coroner: maybe not a fair choice for the "went nowhere" tag, as they relased 5 albums and toured internationally. One of my fave metal bands EVER. They evolved a lot like Rush, and their songwriting/playing got better with each release. Brutal, brutal band. Wish they would reunite.
  10. Backstory: 25yrs of either modded JCM800s or Boogie Mark Series (MkIIc, MkIIIc, recently a first-run Stiletto Duece)... Prefer what I've known: Simulclass Boogs w/6L6-EL34 combo. Versatile amps, great lead sound but VERY, ah, "hifi", so to speak. Never used the graphic much, and hate the smiley-face EQ curve that is so popular. Why kill the mids? I like a graphic curve that boosts the mids and brings the bass out of mushville... IMO, many people value the MKIII sound because of Metallica. However, their engineer says James' sound has more to do with the way the room is built and the tuning thereof than the actual amp. Once the raw amp sound hits the board/signal processing, it's all over. Pros: Very reliable, over-built and loud. I did have a MkIIc which needed a few transformers to settle down, but sold the damn thing due to it's weight. Cons: Sometimes hard to get a primitive, fukked up sound. They tend to reveal themselves after a lot of knob twiddling. Once you find your sound, though, look out. To be fair, I've had no experience with Nomads, DCs, Lone Stars, Subways or any of their recent offerings except for the Stiletto, which I really liked. Great rock head and easy to get sounds from. If you're looking for a Boogie, my advice would be to decide what you want to do with it. A Roadking/ster would be great for a cover band gig (Nomads, DCs, too). Stilettos/Rectos perfect for metal, etc. I'm a big fan of our NoCal local boys from Petaluma, but am quite satisfied w/my VAC22 combo. That, combined with a small pedalboard, currently covers all the bases.
  11. Huh...who knew? I used Pickboy carbon graphite 'pot' picks for years (1mm) and always got great service from Brooklyn/Adam Levy. And, yes, I paid retail for my bags as they shipped fast and those picks seemed to last forever. Frankly, Kevin, I'm a bit suprised at your post. IMO, you're overreacting and taking Brooklyn's silence personally. They're just stupid picks. Just use something else in the meantime and have your VISA charge reversed. Or, do what I did: Settle for Fender heavies and don't insist on using specialty picks that are hard to find and cost $1 each...
  12. Where's the conflict? Buy it. You can always sell it for what or more than you paid and buy a Hamer that won't even get you close to the sound you're looking for. LPs kick ass. Buy it...

  14. Petty/Heartbreakers during "...Torpedoes" era, "The Waiting." Petty w/Rick 12ver spotlighted and playing solo. The band slammed in after the middle eight ("don't let 'em get ta yewww-ewww...") with Campbell's solo and it was powerful and VERY rock. Can't find a vid of it anywhere, but it kick(s)ed ass. Yeesh, his original band had some major balls. Florida is like the Texas of the southeast: .38 Special, Outlaws, Petty, Skynyrd, Blackfoot (okay, Jersey, too), Rossington-Collins, Molly Hatchet et al...Seems like a lot of talent came out of that part of the U.S. for a while.

  18. Punkrock: VAC22 1x12 combo. LP Std or LP Spcl. Rhythm- Neck: 6-7, Bridge: 10 Lead- Toggle to bridge p/u for boost. Corporate Casual Band: Stiletto Duece w/any guitar. Ch. 1- Fat clean w/some crunch, 100w setting. Ch. 2- Fluid drive, gain around 2o'clock, backing off the presence. 50w setting. Lead-Ch. 2 w/Xotic RS Booster. I guess I don't really use a "distortion" box. If I had to cover a lot of ground with a simple set up (BF/DLX or similar) I'd prolly go with a two stage OD like an FDll, Zinky True Grit, DoubleDrive or similar to get the "faux 3-ch." deal. I hate it when the distortion kicks in and is really compressed. I always used the CompCut on the FDII. The extra headroom made the amp a lot happier.
