  1. My bass amp took a dump yesterday so my descretionary funds are gone.

Call me capricious, but FYI there are eight NOS Hamers (USA made) hanging on the wall at Alan's Music in La Mesa, California.

They've been there for at least 2-3 years (I go in semi-annually to check).

List prices range from $1495 (FM Special) to $2495 (a Monaco of some sort); most are priced at $2295.

There are a couple Monacos, a couple Artists (including a korina / P90 model), a Korina Special, and others that I didn't pay that much attention to.

Just hanging there to be not purchased in 2013 by ye strong of will...

  2. Now that is a pledge that I could live with. 9 guitars is just about right. Just sold a Epi Bonamassa to make way for my incoming Nash thinline. That keeps me at 9 guitars (I don't have to count basses do I?)

They do count, but generally only 4/6 as much as a guitar.

5/6 at my house... times three!

No way I could do this. I'm weak when it comes to basses. And I keep failing the 'one-out' side of one-in, one-out.

  3. "Mad At You" was a great song and a great early video; ditto "Steppin' Out". There was a live version of the latter song that came out many years later was almost unrecognizable due to the much-slower tempo and alternate intro. Cool fretless bass sound on that live tune as well; for some reason I'm thinking it might have been Pino Palladino.

+1 that Jackson's an "artist" as opposed to an "entertainer" or "musician"

That was Joe's left hand - he's a killer pianist!

+1000 that he's an artist. He's tried on several styles over the years and done them well (although I can't say Symphony #1 excited me).

He's in my top 5 personal faves list.

and +1 on Big World. Truly good stuff, and recorded as a 'live' album (one take in a club).

  4. When it comes to anything rock-related, why play anything else. In other words, what are the "problems" with the P-Bass that subsequent models were attempting to fix?

    Austin

Fender released the Jazz Bass with the thinner neck to keep the guitarists-doubling-on-bass happy. And, the JB covers different sonic territory with the two single coils.

But these weren't 'problems', just variations on a theme.

I have a half dozen basses, each with its own character. My '95 Mexican P-bass is just kickass! And it fits anywhere: funk, country, blues, even jazz if you massage it correctly...

Dirt cheap USA Highway 1 Tele that I picked up new in 2003/4. It was a GC sale, $500 out the door with a hardshell case (guitar itself was the magic three-fifty!).

It's an old photo; now it's wearing a tort pickguard and brass barrels, and a few more divots in the nitro finish.

I've been through a number of guitars since, including a couple G&L ASATs, and this one hangs on. It has that feel!

  6. Rocktuna invoked familial privilege so tonight I picked it up on his behalf.

The seller plays progressive metal, so I suspect this guitar sat on the stand in preference of an instrument better suited to metal (he's gone the 7-string route).

I would call it good to very good condition. There are some scuffs on the body but no scratches or dings - I think a good buffing would take care of them. Pickguard is unmarked(!). The neck has some dings on the back, the fingerboard is okay (well, needs cleaning) and the frets could use a dressing, but it's very playable as is. Pickups are strong 'n' loud. As advertised, original bridge is corroded (I grabbed it as well).

With a little TLC Rocktuna will have a pretty nice Daytona. A better investment than an older Strat...
