  1. The thing about this build that really amazed me is how good it sounds. That same pickguard w/fralins sounded just meh in my Strat deluxe. The EMGs sound great in that one. Go figure.
  2. I couldnt afford the car so I made the guitar
  3. Well, this project turned out well I always loved this movie and it was a big part of my impressionable youth. I had a bunch of strat parts left over from various experiments, all I needed was a body and neck, so I thought I would try and duplicate this Strat from the movie. I could have just bought one off the shelf as this is a pretty common color scheme, but then I would still have those parts left over. I figure around a grand total cost. THIS THING SOUNDS EPIC! Parts list is as follows. A. New fender MIM body (really nice, I was surprised) $250 B. New Fender 70's style headstock neck with satin finish. $350 C. Callaham Trem and othe nickel parts I already had. D. Fralin vintage hot loaded pickguard with blender pot that I had in my box of stuff. I'm probably biased because I built this myself( not hard at all, anyone could do it) but this sounds and plays better than any Strat I've ever had. Everyone should give this a go before buying a new one off the shelf.
  4. I loved the purple FM I got from Caddy and then sold to Special K ... Wish I had that one back! In somewhat related news my cousin was murdered in Italy (80's) and his parents flew over and had him put in a super deluxe coffin dressed in his finest suit. He was a school teacher on a US military base there and everyone loved him so it was a big deal. When his coffin arrived in the US he was completely naked. Someone had stolen everything on him, including his underwear, either on the flight or somewhere along the way. As you might realize this has seriously affected my family even after 40 years or so. It certainly lowered my opinion of humanity a few notches.
  5. I dont know anything about any drama but I do know that they sound fantastic and everything I've ever bought from Jim has been top quality

  7. WOW Just put a WCR (JMP) Murkat in my Chap it sounds ... beautiful
  8. OK SOOOOOO >>>> the 37mm is the right size but the three holes in the top are a different spacing. I bought a OFR block and it's a hamer branded licensed floyd rose .... HELP !!!!
  9. I went with a 37 just to be safe ... thanks! But someday I will have 86 short scale set neck again, oh yes
  10. lovely ... I bet you're a blast (no pun intended) at parties
  11. Actually he bought it already modded from a professional musician in a LA weekly newspaper. Remember want ads? Before the interwebs?
  12. But at least these make sense! It's easy really, the switch at the top ... don't use that. Three way switch like a LP, self explanatory but mostly leave it on the bridge (super distortion) Chrome knobs ... volume volume tone ... super practical.
  13. That's it. It's fun. Not hi fidelity. The new strat I just put together blows it away in terms of tone etc. But I guess it just must have personality or "sumting." My guitar tech thought it could use a pickup upgrade but I think just about any pickups would sound the same ... It sounds a little "loopy" on account of the short scale. 24" I think it is.... Maybe Vic would know?
  14. what size brass block for 1990 bolt on chap with OFR? Thanks I see they make 32, 37 and 42 sizes
  15. Have my friend Tom Kelley in Santa Barbara make you one. This one is mahogany, chambered with a maple top. Since he lives right down the road from Seymour he had the custom shop wind him custom pickups.
  16. The HSS look was really bothering me even though it sounded great. My guitar tech thought the noiseless pickups sounded "modern and artificial" although they sounded just fine to me. Initially I ordered a Callaham upgrade kit (saddles, trem arm solid steel block etc) and used it with the existing HSS system. It sounded fantastic. One down one to go. I then went with JB JR and SSS pickguard and assembled it myself with the existing noiseless pickups. And it sounded horrible. I'm sure it was my fault as the wiring was very tricky and cumbersome. So, frustrated, I just ordered a loaded pickguard (Amazon $289) with Fralin vintage hots, blender pot and base plate. The loaded pickguard was pretty good, wiring super clean and well done. Only complaints are that the mint green is a darker shade than genuine Fender. It's $285 for the pickups alone so that's a good deal. Anyway, sounds great. Very low noise, I think the added ground wires with newer 2 point trem system helps in that. I even watched some youtube videos and set up the trem perfectly. Yay me
