  1. Never liked them growing up, but I did have Creatures of the Night and Ace's solo album. The drummer and bass player in my band LOVE them so I gave them another shot a few years ago and now I like something off of pretty much every album and I actually bought Sonic Boom. I think I'll be getting this one too.

  2. I'm right now working on a couple of songs for DOA next year (I'm not sure if I will be able to make it, but anyway...). Sadly, I'm missing the Chicago party but Gene, please, organize something in Washington with Dave. We need to do that one!

I'd love for a DC jam to happen. I'm a couple of hours away and would definitely attend that one.

  3. Dave Alvin's Eleven Eleven

    Totally cool!

    ^^^^

Cool. I can get it in NOS vinyl from Amazon for about $330. That's the last album with Bonzo, not counting post mortem collections, right?

Don't do it! I'll sell you my well-cared for copy for $320.

Seasick Steve's You Can't Teach an Old Dog New Tricks

It was almost over before I realized that was John Paul Jones on bass (I think).

  4. On the "Best Year" topic, I think we all have our own definition of that. Mine is '79, although '76, '77, '78, and '80 were good for me too. I've had this discussion with MANY people over the years and it seems like a lot of us think the best year(s) in music was right around the time we were 13-17 years old. That's certainly true in my case.

  5. Thank you all for voting!

It was a good time. About 15 kids ages 7-12 and all special needs kids. I let 5 kids play. I showed them a strumming pattern and hung the guitar on them while I barchorded A/G/E for them. The group clapped and we would play about 8 to 12 bars. Grins all around and a couple short small smiles from one who never seemed to smile. I had Dean guitar stickers for everyone and guitar picks for those who played. one of them seemed super excited he could keep it. One guy was really disappointed he did not get to play but he still had a good time too. To soon it was over and summer school was over for them.

    Life IS Good!

Sounds awesome! You're one of the good ones.

  6. I just saw the LEMMY movie last night so it's been a Kilmister binge all day. Motörhead and I go back together until around 1981-1982 when I was twelve and first heard them. My parents did not allow me to go and see them live then, but I have seen them at least a dozen times through out the years. Great band. Had it's ups and downs. My fav record is Another perfect day, a bit un orthodox perhaps, (and Ace of Spades of course).

Another Perfect Day is my favorite too. The songs may not have been as "Motorhead" as the earlier albums, but I think most people would have to concede the guitar playing was probably the best they've ever had. YMMV.

  7. My top 10;

1 Black guitars always sound more metal than any other colour.

2 Ebony fingerboards sound more metal than rosewood or maple because they're blacker.

3 A zebra, covered, or cream pup in the bridge position will ruin your metal rhythm tone. It has to be black.

4 The only reason Hamer Standards have white or M.O.P. logos/fret markers is that if they used black inlay, you wouldn't see it against the black headstock. Or the ebony board.

5 Cream or white binding - plus chrome hardware - is reluctantly permissible - but only because the contrast makes your black guitar look way blacker.

6 The flightcase has to be black as well. Any non-blackness will seep into your axe during transit and make it less metal.

    7 So does the strap.

8 And your picks. Hard playing with a .88mm Tortex will deposit an extra layer of black dust between your neck and bridge pups, increasing the fullness of the tone and reducing dangerous non-metal resonances.

9 If you insist of giving your axe a name, make sure it's 'Blackie', 'Dark Lord' or something similar. Anything less will cause the guitar to worry that it isn't metal enough.

    10 Any questions - see point 1.

    none more black

  8. Gene, love ya but I don't see anything wrong with Dave's behavior in that clip. In fact, I thought it all kicked ass.

I was waiting for a KAPOW-worthy moment but didn't see it either. I think we all still kind of expect the worst when Eddie and Dave get together.

  9. I turned 48 last week and got rid of all my V's. Oh wait, I didn't have any.

However, I do have a burst Standard and a Zandard, and I bought the pinkburst Dean Cadillac from David B a few weeks ago. Am I too old to play those in public? I think Rick Nielsen would agree you don't get too old to play crazy-looking guitars.
