And didn't Mr. PRS once say that his inspiration ( or similar quote ) was Hamer Guitars?

I actually met him at work ( Sam Ash Music Forest Hills NY ) in 1986 or 1987, and he was in jeans and a plaid shirt. He was a very quiet type, while a guy in a suite was the mouthpiece of the duo.  He didn't seem at all like the owner of a company like PRS.

To quote the ever-quotable SLOAN (Chris Murphy/Jay Ferguson get credit for this line), "it's not the band I hate, it's their fans".

I get that. I've felt that way without having a term for it. Thanks for that.

Forgive my cluelessness, but was the responder saying that Hamer Prototypes came first? How is this a burn? I don't think PRS was referring to his guitars with the name, "Prototype." Please tell me what I am missing here.

I'm puzzled, too. Those were Paul's first two guitars. And they helped him launch the company, as they were his proof of concept. Seems like a factual post.

Just a good reason to lash out. 😅

This is why my PRS never comes along when I play out and/or go to jams. I don't want to get "discovered". Thankfully it seems like their S2 and Bolt on lines are bringing in people less obsessed with 10-tops, mammoth ivory, and "sinker mahogany".

So, which ownership group is the most annoying: PRS Wood Librarians; Jeep Cultists; or Harley Hogs?

I have a Harley, and even find Harley guys annoying, though I imagine this stuff is all a bit of reality crossed with a Baader-Meinhof effect. They're the only ones who have a tendency to be more than just pedantic in disastrous ways if you run into the right crowd of them.  Then again, you can get away from most of them around here just by being able to complete a u-turn.

The Wood Librarians seem to have dried up a bit in the last decade. I've mentioned gigging in the 00s in the past and being asked why I was playing such an old, beat up guitar (78 LPC) when I could be playing a fancy PRS by guitarists in other bands. Then again, that kind of 20-something then is the exact kind of 40-something now who would be spending $8k on a Norlin-era silver burst or would be a decorated veteran of the Modeler vs. Tube Forum Wars. Perhaps they never truly left.

I've never run into the Jeep Cultists... thankfully. I have gotten sit in a Ford GPA "Seep", which I would bet the vast majority of the cultists cannot say. I also know how to drive an original WWII transmission jeep, though starting it is ALWAYS FUN.

The Harley fanatics are annoying but easily dealt with by pointing out some smudges on their chrome. Most don't want the "blackout" or "denim" finishes, as they can't polish them.

The Wood Librarians though... I think they take the cake. There is no other group where you get such an air of Snobbery broadcast, even amongst their fellow PRS fans. Doesn't matter if you have an OG PRS from the 80s with the Sweet Switch. In their minds, they are nothing compared to their Wood Library Private Stock guitar, even if they are one of those inscrutable people who purchases a Metallic or Solid finish OVER A FLAMED MAPLE TOP. Now THAT is something I will thumb my nose at. Wasting a flamed maple top just so you can have the natural binding effect on a solid finish.

Here is the order:

  1. Harley Owners: The black vests, the poseur "Accountant by day, biker by night" vibe... Total cringe and tops the list by a wide margin.
  2. PRS Wood Librarians:  NOT PRS players or PRS owners, mind you, but the ones who....well, you know the ones I mean.
  3. Jeep Owners: Do not even belong on the list, and not because I have owned several Jeeps. Jeep owners don't do anything "inside" with other Jeep owners other than beep and offer a thumbs up when they see another Jeep driver on the road.

I mostly associate Jeeps with sorority girls these days. In Oxford, that was the weapon of choice in between the Land Rover era and the new Bronco era for them.

Speaking of 10 tops, I bought a PRS for a lady friend back in 1988 and a Jazz guitarist who owned one said to get her the all mahogany one because of the tone.

There are many that agree. The original Les Paul custom guitars were all mahogany, and they didn't get maple top until they returned in 1969. Plenty of all mahogany guitars have great tone.

But then everyone became obsessed with the figured tops, and who could have the best one. From my days as a Carvin fan, it seems like the number one reason for people returning the top of the line models was that they didn't like the top, or didn't feel it was "good enough", even though it was awesome. They wanted something that pretty much looked like a desktop wallpaper, without the variation that I think gives wood such a fantastic look.

With respect Kiz, you're late to the Jeep Cult party. It's worse than the chest beating caveman conformity you see on the Chive.

My late FIL was a very old school Scots Irish Southerner, and he referred to his biker coworkers as "Harley Lads". The grizzled, rough hewn lifers (machinists) loved it and thought it amusing. The posers (engineers) found it derisive and mocking. I carry on his legacy by using the term when appropriate.

The Chive?  What’s that?

BTW: Bought my first Jeep (a new Renegade) in ‘86.  Learned how to drive on my uncle’s ‘75 CJ-5 back in ‘82.  But I never got into the “club” mindset, aside from the aforementioned “Jeep wave.”
Really the only club I ever belonged to was with you clowns.
