1981 Special? Newbie Needs Help

Hey Everyone!

I just found this board and searched through it before bothering everyone with a newbie post /emoticons/default_blink.png

I recently pulled out my old Hamer and did some research on the net. My Serial Number is inked on the headstock as 1 2900 and I'm pretty sure that means 1981- 2900th guitar made.

It's a double cut-away Special with a Red & Cream Arrow/Checkerboard graphic. Everything is original (even the nics it got along the way).

I was thinking about selling it, but honestly have no idea if it's worth $100 or $1000. Any advice/help/insight you guitar gods can offer a girl would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to the board.

That guitar is worth much more than $100.

Say.... about $350 /emoticons/default_blink.png

Somebody had to say it.

Sounds like an '81 Graphics Special, and I call DIBBS!

(It's worth closer to $1000 than $100, by the way).

POST PICTURES!

The Graphic Specials seem to be a "love 'em or hate 'em" thing, but a cool graphic will bring a bit more than a regular sunburst, natural, black or trans cherry one.

Most graphics were Black and White - you should pop up a pic of yours! It sounds really cool, and the red/white graphic is not as common.

I'll trade you two packets of Pop Rocks, an '81 transparent red Special and Kizanski for it. /emoticons/default_blink.png

Edit to add, Chris and Kiz pretty much nailed it. POST PICS!

How about Two Packets of Pop Rocks to help me get some pics up on this board... /emoticons/default_blink.png

Sounds like a very cool Special, but trust me, taking Kizanski in trade will bankrupt you...

The last red and white graphic Special I remember seeing was at Studio 42 Music in Wilmington many years ago (probably '81).

I bought it in '82, and everything is original except the strap pegs. I think I may have one of the original ones in the case. But, I swapped them out for strap locks when I first got it. After checking out some other Special photos I realized I may have changed the pots knobs. Other than that..it's plug and play!

I got it on 46th Street in NYC and can't remember how much I paid. It was my main guitar when I was gigging with it and used it with a Marshall 800 Combo and crank the overdrive to give me that crunch I lived for!

I've never seen another one like it. Just Rick Neilson's custom collection.

BTW, Serial, I think we're showing our age!

I was three at the time. OK. No I wasn't... /emoticons/default_blink.png

I have an '81 graphic Special-the only one I've been able to hang on to of the four or five Specials I've had-that one is a great one.

Very cool.

Okay, my '81 Special, two packs of Pop Rocks, Kizanski and BCR Greg for that thing!

I was 29 /emoticons/default_blink.png

you gotta wonder what kind of drugs these guys were doing to come up with some of these graphics. I like this one.

Oh that ROCKS! Actually, those graphics weren't done "in house" as I understand it. They went outside to a woman who painted them all and sent them back in for final clearcoating.
