I like my Special better than my Studio?

I just want to see if anyone else has this opinion. I just got a 93 Special FM last week and I had a 96 Studio Custom bound and Crowned Flametop. I ended up selling the Custom because I liked my LP copy better. I absolutely love this Special. The only way I can explain it is the Special feels like driving a porsche in the curves compared to the custom being an old Chevy Camaro hotrod. Am I insane or does anybody else prefer the Special? This guitar plays itself almost and is light!

Well, I love my Special FM. I have not owned a Studio, yet. But, the only real difference is the archtop, binding and inlays (for the Custom). Otherwise, I'm under the impression that they sound pretty much the same. For me, tone is more important that cosmetics. Yeah, it's great to have a guitar that looks nice. But I'd rather get comments on my tone. (of course, when I took my Special FM to jam a song with on of my school instructors, everyone at the bar commented on how nice the Specail FM was). Don't feel bad, the Special is an awesme guitar and one hell of a bang for the buck.

I absolutely agree with you. I have owned several of each, and i like the Special FMs, all of them, better than any studio I have owned.

I just put Rios in mine (thanks BCR Greg!), and the tech that did the work is a huge Hamer fan. He told me a story of how he had a choice to buy either a Studio or a Special FM, and upon playing both, he knew immediately which one was more resonant-the Special FM.

It sounds and plays way better than the Studio Custom that I had, no comparison. Even my I only play Les Paul friend tried it and he didn't stop for about an hour. When he was done he said "that is a nice guitar I would gig with that" He didn't add the usual it's not as nice as my 57 or 59 like he usually does. I have to say also that my Studio had a RIO and a Lindy Fralin in it so it was not stock. The Special FM is stock and like new.

I played a studio custom, a special FM and a Korina Jr. today.

I would rank them in terms of tone: Korina Jr. 1st, Studio Custom 2nd and Special FM 3rd. They were all very nice and I don't think you could go wrong with any of them. Play watever you like and don't listen to anyone else.

I happen to love Gibson SG Specials, one of the cheapest guitars in the Gibson line. I would easily chose it over the more expensive models.

Also, as we all know, certain guitars are just special. Maybe your Special is one of those special guitars. That is why I try to play everything at the store, every once in awhile you find a special guitar in an unlikely package.

Specials Rule!

Sustain Block Special FMs rule the world!

I'd take a Special over a Studio any day of the week. Built for comfort AND speed.

Hi,

My favorite guitar I have ever owned is my P 90 special. I played Tom terrifics gold top at the MWJ5 and I must say,one of those are on my must have list one of these days.

The Studio Custom was a great guitar for sure I just didn't mesh with it. I wanted to and tried to like it for a long time then I traded it for an SG standard that I liked better. After about a month my Fatdog Black Beauty was still my number one so I traded the SG for my Daytona. Now I am selling the Daytona and I have three similar but different sounding guitars that I really like. I think my Frankinstein Firebird is my favorite and the other two are both great. I am officially done buying toys as soon as I get a cab.

I have several of both Specials (in several varieties) and Studios. Each has it's own thing going, but my Special FM is still my go-to guitar, especially in the 'something with humbuckers' category.
