I've always like bands with great or funny witty lyrics. Jethro Tull, Joe Jackson, Cheap Trick, Elvis Costello to name a few so I thought a thread of our favorite lyrics would be interesting. whole songs, verses or parts.

I'll start with Lit's description of an entire infatuational relationship in the least number of words in Miserable.

You make me come.

You make me complete.

You make me completely miserable.

The entire relationship in only 7 words.

Add you own!

she thinks I'm in love and I know that sucks,

Half a dozen provocative squats!

Out of the shower she squeezes her spots.

Brushes her teeth.

Shoots a deoderant spray up her twaaaaAAAAAaaaat...

It's getting her, getting her, getting her hot.

My friend Marlee MacLeod has written some of my favorite opening lines to songs:

Water is for walking, except when it's for wine.

You've done the talking and I have done the time.

And every night you go and you lay your hand on the radio

And you say, "I feel it, I feel it, I do."

I feel it, too

But not with you.

Or:

She swung at his heart like it was a pinata 'til she got what she wanted

And the blindfold made her aim that much truer

Or:

I woke up with survivor's guilt

Cryin' over milk I'd spilt

Are these the hands that time slipped through?

Or:

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine

But I've had it up to here

all the creatures, on the beaches

makin' waves in the motion picture

won't you keep this, in between us

search and seizure, wake up venus

the dollar bill wil

mentally ill pill

mom and dad take your 'dont be sad' pill

turn the screw and twist my language

don't forsake me im contagious

and

come to decide that the things that i tried were in my life just to get high on

when i sit alone, come get a little known

but i need more than myself this time

step from the road to the sea to the sky, and i do believe that we rely on

when i lay it on, come get to play it on

all my life to sacrifice

"Are You Happy Now?" By Richard Shindell

(from the album Sparrows Point)

You took the toaster when you went

You never paid your half the rent

You took the spices from the rack

But you don’t have to put them back

Cause in your haste on Halloween

You left your camera on the bed

Where we played roles in black and white

You left a role of black and white

I set the timer and thought of you

And put the lense up to my head

I took a photograph for you

What comes out gray is really red

Are you happy now?

I smashed your pumpkin on the floor

The candle flickered at my feet

As goblins flew across the room

The children peered into the room

A cowboy shivered on the porch

As Cinderella checked her watch

A hobo waited in the street

An angel whispered, trick-or-treat

But what was I supposed to do

But to sit there in the dark?

I was amazed to think that you

Could take the candy with you too

Are you happy now?

I’ve sat all night and now it’s dawn

And I cannot believe my eyes

There’s garbage strewn across the lawn

Where we once stared up at the sky

And streams of paper fill the tree

That hovered over you and me

Shaving cream covers the car

That we picked up in Baltimore

Though I know it’s hard to tell

I hope that what’s-his-name treats you well

I still maintain that he’s a bum

But it’s your money – have some fun

And are you happy now?

You always asked why I had not

Written you a verse or two

Since that’s the one thing I regret

I dedicate this one to you

Are you happy now?

Are you?

(sung to a typical c/w groove)

Well the first time I met Dixie was in a parkin' lot in Austin

I was sittin' in my pickup all alone

She walked out the Wal Mart and took one look at my truck

And asked me if I'd like to take her home

She said she had a new place but we went by her old place

'cause she said there's somethin' she forgot to do

Well one hug and one kiss later..she unplugged her 'fridgerator

That's when I knew I was helpin' Dixie move...

"I love the way you smack my ass...."

Puddle of Mud

"Elvis was a hero to most

But thats beside the point

A black man taught him how to sing

And then he was crowned king

The pelvis of Elvis

Too dangerous for the masses

They cleaned him up and sent him to Vegas

Now the masses are his slave

Slave? slave

Yes, even from the grave...."

Hard to deny the benchmark author of clever rock and roll innuendo:

"Goin' out on the town

Just a me and you...

Gonna have ourselves a party,

just like we used to do...

Nobody's playing Manilow,

nobody's playin' soul...

and no one's playing hard-to-get,

just a good-ol' rock and roll..."

RIP, Bon Scott...

From "House of Love" by Squeeze:

A very acidic tongue

Waggled in her head

Life was lots of fun

At times I had to smile

In front of everyone

We seemed the best of friends

Life had just begun

When on the roof a tile began to slip

The house of love caved in and that was it

or..."Miniature Sun" or so many things by XTC

I'm 12 o'clock,

All daylight hours,

I'll warm your bed,

I'll grow your flowers.

Like I'm a miniature sun.

This ball ignited when she told me I was her only one.

I'm not the same now.

I'm not that plain little boy.

I'm all aflame now.

I'm king up here like a miniature sun.

No life comes close,

I'm rising higher,

On holiday,

On ball of fire,

You made a miniature sun.

Theres no more shadows in this world she says I'm her only one.

I'm not the same now.

I'm not that plain little boy.

I'm all aflame now.

I radiate like a miniature sun.

Now everything looks right today,

A billion watts of bright today.

And I'm a blazing kite today.

I think I'll float around her house,

And tell her exactly how she makes me glow.

But then the other man leaving merely doffs his hat,

And I'm the last to know.

Now everything looks wrong today.

An out of tune sung song today.

I've grown from big King Kong today,

Right down to miniature...

Don't come too close,

I'll burn your arm,

I'll bleach your hair,

Dustbowl your farm,

I'll blind your eyes,

You blinded mine,

I'll spin with rage,

All summertime,

You made a miniature sun. Just take a look up in the nightsky, I'm not the only one.

I'm not the same now.

I'm not that vain little boy that I was.

I'm all to blame now,

Look out below here I come!

Man crashing down like a miniature sun

2541 by Grant Hart (can't find the lyrics)...but I heard Marshall Crenshaw play it and it was simple and beautiful.

"I Feel Free" and "Sweet Wine" by Cream

"Feel when I dance with you,

We move like the sea.

You, youre all I want to know.

I feel free, I feel free, I feel free.

I can walk down the street, theres no one there

Though the pavements are one huge crowd.

I can drive down the road; my eyes dont see,

Though my mind wants to cry out loud."

* * *

"Sweet wine, hay making, sunshine day breaking.

We can wait till tomorrow.

Car speed, road calling, bird freed, leaf falling.

We can bide time."

Raisins/Psychodots wrote some of my all time favorites.

king of beers

written by bob nyswonger

Don't know how I got here

But I don't really care

They'll kick me out at closing time

I'll go sleep somewhere

Most all of my accounts

Are in arrears

The royal treasury's kind of short

I am the King of Beers

My wife she had a roving eye

And didn't hide the fact

The mailman and the plumber

They all got in on the act

My boy's been running

With a pack of queers

But the great can bear adversity

And I'm the King of Beers

Sometimes I get shaky and

I can't keep down a thing

But no one ever said

It would be easy

Being king

The pressures of my office

Have hastened this decline

'Cuz when I peel my eyelids back

It feels like Miller Time

Most all my proclamations

End in "Cheers!"

You've got to keep your spirits high

When you're the King of Beers

If my luck holds

I'll reign a few more years

Until my sceptre floats away

I am the King of Beers

I have two. These come from two of my favorite bands right now.

"Living like a fish inside my dirty bowl

I'm breathing but I want to die"

Punch People

"We danced shoes on shoes

To the sound of the spinning machines

We slept arm in arm

So soundly

Ignoring the outside sounds

Of the ongoing horrible scene"

Big bottom drive me out of my mind

How could I leave this behind

"I'm gonna have to send you back to bitch school!"

"If she's not on the 519, then I'm gonna know what sorrow means

And I'm gonna cry, cry, cry, all the way home"

"Workin on a sex farm

Tryin' to raise some hard love

Getting out my pitch fork

Pokin' your hay"

with a sense of irony everyone you see is chasing their illusions

take a dive or sink or swim but together we're in the same pollution

in your world escape is swift the nonsense list is all you need to know

in the land of dreams you make the right connections then you'll be the hero

ecstacy, the cult of me provide our institutions

you can live forever beside a grave that stands where people used to function

you can join the saviors of our culture vultures circling overhead my sky

like the sin of gluttony won't set you free but Betty Ford can help you try

you can get all the things you ever needed

you can sell people crap and make them eat it

where is our John Wayne where's our sacred cowboy now?

where are the indians on the hill -there's no indians left to kill

where is our John Wayne where's our sacred cowboy now?

where are the indians on the hill -there's no indians left to kill

people die with oxygen and all their money can't afford a breath

people starving everywhere and staring in the face of death

prostitutes and politicians lying in their bed together

you can be the savior of the poor

making all the policies to open up the back door.

Bruce Dickinson's "sacred cowboys"

and just the chorus from another of his, "the road to hell"

"Father forgive me my sins, give me the nails, I'll hammer them in"

Some of my favourite lyrics:

Scuze me ... while I kiss the sky ...

Jimi Hendrix

Watch out where the Huskys go

Don´t you eat that yellow snow

Frank Zappa

I boogied in the kitchen

I boogied in the hall

I got some on my finger

So I wiped it on the wall!

I aint saying you treated me unkind

You could have done better, but I don't mind

You just kinda wasted my precious time

But don't think twice, its alright.

Bob Dylan

I once broke up with a girl by writing out those lyrics in their entirety and putting them under one of the windshield wipers of her car. That remains one of the coolest things I've ever done.

Indeed x2. I've always loved this line of his:

"She wanted it hard, she wanted it fast, she liked it done medium rare."

"And the trees are all kept equal... by hatchet, axe, and saw."

Neil Peart/Rush

-Bobby

The clouds prepare for battle

In the dark and brooding silence.

Bruised and sullen stormclouds

Have the light of day obscured.

Looming low and ominous

In twilight premature

Thunderheads are rumbling

In a distant overture...

All at once, the clouds are parted.

Light streams down in bright unbroken beams...

Follow men's eyes as they look to the skies.

The shifting shafts of shining weave the fabric of their dreams...

--Jacob's Ladder

+1 on elvis is dead and

+100 for Bon Scott

Some balls are held for charity

And some for fancy dress

But when they're held for pleasure

They're the balls that I like best

My balls are always bouncing

To the left and to the right

It's my belief that my big balls

Should be held every night
