What a good price?

Got a line locally on a 1990 Hamer Centura USA in translucent green. The guy is asking $500 which strikes me as high. Want to try a new shredder after selling my old Kramer Focus...

Posted

If it happens to be the rarer 2HB Centaura (with the reverse-slanted direct-mounted pickups) that price is not bad.

If it is the more run of the mill Centaura H-S-S, I'd think you could find one cheaper if you're willing to wait around a little while. They typically show up here in the HFC-approved price range, give or take a few bucks.

Yeah, this one is H-S-S. Interested because it's local, but have seen them around here in the $300-400 range...

I think the $350 days are still here, but I wouldn't count on them sticking around. If it's dead mint and has the hardcase, $500 might be ok. Trans green is a bit unusual for those I think, I've only seen Diablos in trans-green. If he's asking $500, I'll bet he'd take $450, and I'm imagine you're the only one asking him about it!

Those guitars are overdue for a price hike. I've thought of selling mine, but it's too cool to sell for $350.

$350 IMHO is high, I use to pay not to long ago about $200-250 for these. Very thin necks on all of the ones I had. It seams the used prices on Hamers is getting high quickly and out pricing me, but if you like it, go for it if it fits ya!! Jack.

Jimbilly, if you even remotely consider selling that for $350 I'll think you're crazy.

How's that for a first post (aside from the ones where I was shopping)?

That is a very cool guitar.

I used to own a 90 (I think) Centaura I bought for $300 in Eureka, CA when my wife was away, making money. I loved that guitar even though it was a shredder and didn't 'get' it at first sight. The color put me off. But the fretboard was like a classical instrument's and the 24 fret neck was perfect. 2 JB humbuckers and perfect shielding – altogether a super guitar. I used to play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata on it with my echoplex, no kidding. Anyhow, I got tired of having to use an allen wrench to tune up to other players and decided to sell it on craigslist. I found out it was a rare instrument made especially for Valley Music in Livermore, in a color scheme he specified ( black dragged in silver, called "valley Granite")! The original dealer made an offer on it, then didn't buy it. I eventually sold it for $450 to a scientist in Fremont. He lent it to the original dealer afterwards. Damn, I miss every cool guitar after I sell it!

Aceldama - did you ever end up picking up the green Centaura? Would love to see a picture of it...

That is a great looking guitar. I just bought one from the 'Bay with a tobacco burst finish with HB/S/S and reverse headstock. I probably paid too much for it. But I boiled it down to, get a new(er) G&L Legacy (great guitar, no doubt, but I don't have a passion for the brand) v. Daytona v. what I found here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...361457&rd=1

All in all, I'm planning on holding it for a long time and I hope to play it quite a bit. Bottom line was I really liked it. It'll compliment the sunburst finish on my USA Archtop Studio Custom. :P

OMG! I so wanted that guitar when I saw it on ebay... didn't have the cash to get it though. I don't think you paid too much, those are hard to find, and they play incredible. Would LOVE to own a centaura that has maple neck. Both of mine have rosewood necks.

Thanks for the compliment on my burst! This one has a built in adjustable EQ with active electronics (have to replace that 9v battery from time to time). But I love these guitars. Wish they still made them. There was a blue one on ebay as well a few months ago... wanted that one too. Hell... I want them all!! hehehe. I'd get a daytona, if I could get one with a Floyd. Been trying to find a firebird... and they won't make them on special order either... so they are very hard to find.

$350 is extremely fair. I haven't seen one of these for less than that in years and the imports are selling occasionally for more than $200 used (possibly through buyer confusion, but that's not even a bad deal if you think about it). If I had one, there's little chance I'd sell it for that little myself! I'd be more inclined to part one out if they were that cheap-the Floyd is worth $75-100 by itself (unless it's stripped or really beat), the pickups at least $50, the neck more than $100, and then you have the body $50-75 on a bad day), parts and case! No way less than $350 IMHO.

I almost never see the firebirds. Daytonas/T-51s pop up here and there. I'll have to pick up one of those at some point. I remember playing a Special with the flat top and P90s through an older Fender Tube amp: VALHALLA I AM COOOMINNGGG!! What a great sound! The only thing was that there was no trem and I was still in my Matthias Jabbs/Rudolph Schenker phase. BTW did you happen to see the KK Downing model V? Nobody bid on it. Not even a nibble. If I hadn't of just picked the Centaur, I would have gone after that one. :P

No one does. They don't exist. It's all photoshopping. Move along-if you see one on Fleabay, it's a scam. TBirds too.

Yeah... I saw that V... I'm not a fan of Kahler's though. I believe thats what it had on it. I've had guitars with no trem... but I always feel naked without them... even if I don't use it much. I checked with the factory on them doing a special order firebird... Frank and Jol weren't interested. blah.

LOL

Do ever see a Blitz? I live in the northern suburbs of Philadelphia, PA and I haven't seen anything like that in the local stores.

Because if it's the one I'm thinking of, it used to be mine. I have (if they existed) another red one like that with a H/S/S configuration and a 5 way selector and master volume only. That was a cool trio.

Steve,

You always talk about this H/S/S Firebird, but you never show any pics of it.

I am beginning to doubt that it exists.

We've gone off topic from the Green Centuara in AZ... but here are other pickup options done on a firebird including a triple coil bucker... :P

Robbin Crosby was the FB King, no doubt.

Here. let me bring the thread back around, since a Centaura and a Diablo are blood brothers:

For a split-second there I thought that was a GMP. :P

That's a fine looking sparkle-bird, Rechts.

That IS a badassed guitar, Jay. My favorite body style in my favorite finish too.

It would look just a little cooler on a Leopardskin and barbed wire barstool though...

COMPLETE Badassity there! FB, Sparkle finish, reverse headstock, single pickup and master volume...killer.

Jay-you KNOW it doesn't exist. If it did, much like a vampire, it wouldn't show up on film! I make all kinds of $hit up like that, you know! :P
