veatch Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 A bit of a stretch for this forum, but for the builders out there, this is one insane top:eBay - Redwood
atquinn Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Hmm, I find that figuring a bit disturbing myself. Someone should make a metal shredder out of it -Austin
BubbaVO Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Wow. Gorgeous. Is that something you'd use as a veneer or would that be the guitar body?
crabby Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Wow. Gorgeous. Is that something you'd use as a veneer or would that be the guitar body?It says it's 1/4" think so it would have to be for a top. I like it!
Russ Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 kinda looks like the inside of a lung...WAY COOL!
gregc Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 That's just NASTY!... and NOT in a good way, IMO.
Crwth145 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Hmm, I find that figuring a bit disturbing myself. Someone should make a metal shredder out of it Yup, that's some mean-looking carnage there...
specialk Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 It reminds me of a short story by Stephen King,
Rhys Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 It's got a really strange 3D quality to it - it looks like an electron microscope picture of lung tissue or something equally unpleasant... or the pictures of the Red Weed from the illustrations for Jeff Waynes "War of the Worlds" album.
Mindseyes Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Thats Sick!...........in a good way kinda...
elduave Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Hmm, I find that figuring a bit disturbing myself. Dude! I thought the same thing!
edgar_allan_poe Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 I have never liked that type of figuring. Is burl really redwood? I don't think they are the same thing, but I could be wrong. If you were going with redwood, Nik Huber can't be touched.
cmatthes Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 If it's redwood, it can be burled. Not real crazy about that figure myself either.
ArnieZ Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Too chaotic for me, don't like it at all. Have to wonder if the wood could even vibrate straight It does look like something out of Histology lab! ArnieZ
santellavision Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Gregger may get mad at me for posting this, but here's my nearly finished Redwood Huber that will be featured at the NAMM show. (No burst/clear-coat yet)
bubs_42 Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Really no one... It looks like Freddy Krugers Face.... The Freddycaster..
mhmike Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 I'd rock that as a top in a second. It looks like organ meat!
BCR Greg Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 I like Redwood.... (note to mods- none of these guitars are for sale)
veatch Posted December 23, 2008 Author Posted December 23, 2008 It's an incredibly interesting top. My first reaction was also that it looked too eerie, but the more i looked at it, the more i wondered how it would look on a guitar. In the end, i didn't bid. Redwood is hard enough to work with, i can't imagine how *that* piece will work. With my remedial skills, i'd end up making toothpicks out of it. (and i need another project like a hole in the head...) The same seller sold this top (CLICK) a while back, which is a little more interesting, but looks like from the same wood. I did get around to doing a Google and found a pic of a guitar with a redwood burl top. Again, interesting and unique: All "luncaster" aside, based upon that pic, i think i like it. Yes sir, i do. ...and speaking of Huber, here's a Huber with a burl redwood top:
veatch Posted December 24, 2008 Author Posted December 24, 2008 How long are the neck pockets on the Hubers? Much further than the neck pup?
SteveB Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 Transparent blood red finish, ebony board no inlays, black hardware, floyd rose... yup, that'd work.
