MrGuitarguy Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Neither will apparently be appearing in the popular video game Guitar Hero ("dad, real guitars are for old people!" -South Park). In fact EVH's son, Wolfy, will be playing bass in the game on the classic hits, which will apparently exclude all of the Van Hagar songs. I thought this was interesting. Maybe Chicken Foot will have some tunes out on Rock Band. Ha! I've only played GH once and I hated it, but thought the VH news was interesting.
backinit Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 I have never understood the Michael Anthony thing. I mean the band was doing nothing and the guy wanted to play. I think those heads may be so swollen that there is little room for anyone else. Lotsa talent there.
Steve Haynie Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Maybe Michael Anthony is being used as a whipping boy for all of Ed's personal problems. Taking Mike's bass lines off of the original recordings is just a way of cutting off a source of residual income and transferring it to Wolfgang. With today's CGI technology we should expect to see Wolfgang replace Michael Anthony in all the old videos, too.
BubbaVO Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Eddie may be a guitar genius, but he sure comes across as vindictive and petty. Or maybe he is a business genius, too?
princeofdarkness56 Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 I heard a new song by Chickenfoot and it really sounded good. Can't say the same thing about VH anymore.
MCChris Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Eddie may be a guitar genius, but he sure comes across as vindictive and petty. Or maybe he is a business genius, too?Doubtful. Sure, cutting Mike's performances out of the video game versions will keep him from getting those residuals, but wasn't all of the songwriting during the Roth era (and the Hagar era as well) credited to all four members? I'd like to see how EVH plans to prevent Michael Anthony from collecting on long-published work credited in part to him.

In the words of the Texas Tornados - "a little bit is better than nada" And I'm sure those little bits add up. I'm really curious to see exacty what rights did Mikey relinquish when he signed on to do the 2004 tour.http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermo...ewsitemID=53466(Listening to Atomic Punk as I type - what a great band - such a shame)
geoff_hartwell Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 With the exception of "Aerosmith" and "Beatles" versions of Rock Band, I don't know if anyone at all gets residual licensing, typically it's a lump sum.For example, when Slash did the on-screen character of himself for the last version, he griped that he had to agree to a lump sum or be excluded entirely. But I think it's f*cking CRIMINAL that the formerly great EVH would not only be so deluded as to think that Wolfgang could hold a candle to Michael Anthony, but goes so far as to retroactively REPLACE him on the classics in an obvious virtual "F*CK YOU"... it's just too much...

Do you mean on Guitar Hero? It almost sounds like you're talking about reissuing cds with Wolfgang replacing Mike... Doing it on Guitar Hero is lame, doing it on future cds re-release borders on criminal- I sure as shit wouldn't buy one.

atquinn Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Screw the bass! Are they cutting out Anthony's vocals? Cause if they do, well, that ain't Van Halen!-Austin

How petty and vindictive do you have to be to do something like that?
DaveL Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Screw the bass! Are they cutting out Anthony's vocals? Cause if they do, well, that ain't Van Halen!-Austin Absolutely right, not many people think about it, but they really contributeto the classic VH sound...

That's one thing that was definitely lacking on the reunion tour.
Armitage Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 There's precedent for this maneuver: Sharon Osbourne removed Daisley and Kerslake's contributions to Blizzard and Diary and had them re-recorded for future pressings/digital files of those releases. But didn't it turn out that Daisley and Kerslake sued the Osbornes for not getting the proper royalties, and it turns out they did as per their contract... THEN Sharon had their parts re-recorded? Kind'a changes the flavour of things a bit.(I read that somewhere, could have been a forum though... so it could be wrong)...Either way, with Ozzy or VH, a big waste of talent. And lets not forget Michael Anthony's voice is a huge part of the VH sound.
MCChris Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Good point. That's one thing that was definitely lacking on the reunion tour.Something else that was lacking on the "reunion" tour: enough people who refused to buy tickets, thereby letting the VH brothers know that this type of bullshit isn't acceptable. But when the sheep can't resist filling arenas because DLR is back on the mic ("normally I wouldn't go but I really wanted my kids to see this" blah blah blah) is it any wonder that these assholes think they can continue to be asshats and get away with it?

Remember VH III and Gary Cherone?

Wolfie's playing was solid although his stage presence was subdued. Maybe the Michael Anthony thing sucks and maybe even the Sammy Hagar thing sucks but that doesn't take away from the killer show they put on the night I saw them. I'd go again.

BTMN Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Having dealt with them in press/photo matters years ago I'd say both. I have a dvd of Philly from the last tour. I have both kicked myself and applauded myself for not going. Missed a good show but didn't give DLR or EVH anymore of my money.
bubs_42 Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 They need not kick a dead dog. I mean damn they are the only ones bringing the past up and ripping on Mike and Sam. Its just sad, VH has no forward momentum and I honestly have't turned a VH album on this year. Leave it be and move the hell on!

That's one thing that was definitely lacking on the reunion tour.I'll add (at least in the case of the Raleigh NC show) a front of house sound man who can mix. For the money I payed that mix was unacceptable. I'm not buying the "it's the venue" crap either. I saw Keith Urban shortly before that in the same venue and in almost the same section and the mix was pristine. There's a couple VH albums that are desert island discs for me but fuck the Van Halen brothers.

Speaking of Guitar Hero, Since we're all actual players here, can anyone play Guitar Hero? I gave it a real honest try and people are astounded by my inability to play. I even surprised myself at how useless I was. I've heard since that actual guitar players cannot play GH. For me, it's a matter that I know how many of those songs are actually played, and I can't force my fingers to do something that it's not supposed to do for that song.
