Wiring a Studio Custom to '79 Sunburst specs

Question

Posted

I just picked up a pair of old DiMarzios from a '78 Sunburst (thanks zenmindbeginner!) and have decided to put them in my '96 Studio Custom and wire it up to match my '79 Sunburst.

So can you guys double check me on the proper wiring for the '79?

(2) 500k volume pots

(1) 250k tone pot

.01 tone cap

pickups wired out of phase

Do I have it right? The Studio Custom is a great guitar but I'm only so-so on the JB/59 that are in there now.

Pretty much sure the Sunburst wiring is same as Studio Custom apart from out of phase pickups.

500 k tone pots vol and tone both guitars.

That would simplify life a bit. :-)

Thanks for the help...

Yes, out of phase wiring by switching the black & white leads on hot & ground, not by turning the magnet in one pup.

You can use a 250k tone pot, it may reduce top end a bit comapred to 500k

I find Old Sunbursts very bright guitars and actually tried a 250 k with good results

I have a 2001 Studio with seth lovers and it's kinda bright....did you replace all the pots with

250K or just the tone or pick up pot? and were you able to still retain that last 9 to 10 boost that it seems only Hamer pots have?

What brand/type pot did u use?

I ended up keeping the stock Hamer pots, got the Luxe cap that RS Guitarworks uses in their Hamer kits. Wound up putting the pickups back in phase - just liked it better that way.
