Northsider Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Are the original Dimarzios in my '79 Sunburst potted? When playing thru a high gain amp, mucho feedback.
formula73 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Nope. The originals in my Deans aren't, either.
Northsider Posted October 16, 2011 Author Posted October 16, 2011 cool. I thought they went microphonic on me.
FrankieIII Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 And don't pot or have them potted as it will change the tone of them...
Northsider Posted October 19, 2011 Author Posted October 19, 2011 Did players complain about them back in the day? I mean, they had high gain amps back then.
murkat Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Did players complain about them back in the day? I mean, they had high gain amps back then.Master volumes on Marshall were still a new thing back then, and tube screamershad not really caught on yet. No real high gain then in the seventies.they used high output pickups to push the amps. But, the pups did squeal if you were not fast on the volume pot.
DarrenD Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 I used to talk into some of mine...LOL. The good ol days!
formula73 Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 And don't pot or have them potted as it will change the tone of them...Only if heavily, heavily potted, like, encased in wax. Keep them nice and hot after pulling them out of the pot for a while to let all the extra drain out.

Keep them nice and hot after pulling them out of the pot for a while to let all the extra drain out.I have to say it alters tone a bit. But you won't hear it if you play through a raging Marshall on ten. If you play more clean or like me throgh a JTM50 Marshall that only overdrives like a 70's amp, then you'll hear a subtle difference. It's the difference that I love, that's why I prefer my pickup un potted. You can try to stick some foamy plastic in the pickup cavity to stabelise it. And/or just wax the pickup screws so that they don't vibrate in the screw holes. Another good trick is to tighten the tape around the bobbins. After 30 years it usually has become quite loose. Tighten the bobbins as hard as you can, that is a good trick.I have un potted pups in all my humbucker guitars. They hardly ever squeal, even if I play my 2104 dimed with gain. Just as long as i don't stand to close to the amp, with the pups facing the speakers.
HoboMan Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 I say dip em' in wax.I've potted all of my unpotted PUs and never noticed a difference, but mainly, it made my guitar useable again.
murkat Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 Let me experiment then I will get back to you.the early dimarzios plastic bobbins will not toleratea lot of heat from the wax. and I do have a couple of dudbobbins so I will try to pot them and see, will report back.dimarzios also used 43 ga wire and loose winds, so, that also is a factor. But, Potting is good and does not change all that much in tone.
bubs_42 Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 I prefer them unpotted, if you want potted and vintage tone buy a new set of 36ths and put these away. I just ordered a set and they should be here by next weekend.
