Advice needed: Severity of damage to neck / value of 80s Sunburst

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have my eye on this:

http://www.ebay.de/i...=item2a2129113c

Forgive me , I haven't figured out how to link to individual pictures directly.

I would like to hear the local experts' opinion on the severity of the neck damage

and get an estimate of what you guys think this one is still worth.

Or if it is worth bidding on at all....

The seller says it's from the late 70s / early 80s.

Tuners not original obviously.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Regards,

Tobias

He does not answer my emails and the headstock does not have a serial number. I say beware, it smells fishy.

The damage on that one is but child's play (trust me on that). BCRGreg or Murkat would scoff at it's insignificance.

...but it would drop the value by about $400 to $600 American pesos.

shim'd bridge, one piece neck, maybe a short headstock... (can not tell) 78 ish.

Old repair, not suprised that serial # not there, maybe in cavities...

Nice top, all is there, except the tuners and nut.

The break is not a good break, along the neck side, a wrap around break at a bad area to break.

nice parts...

If you can nail it cheap, go for it.

the break can be reinforced with today's luthier tech skills, and be stable.

Would look for

fingerboard seperation, delamination, twist and humps in the neck / fingerboard.

Could be a rabbit hole... How long is your arm? ;)

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

The seller says the guitar fell and he didn't notice. No word about the missing serial-nr or the replaced nut.

Awaiting reply from him concerning the state of the frets.

Unfortunately I have no way of playing or inspecting it (before buying).

I'll sleep on it and then see.

Murkat, I wish I had someone with your experience here in the lowlands. I've been watching you and your work....

Regards,

Tobias

Thanks BCR Greg,

Nice to have two resident repair experts chime in !

I've decided to pass on this one, though.

I prefer waiting for a nice Sunburst, FM Special or Studio that's good to go as is.

Thanks again to everybody who contributed and to cmatthes for posting the pics as well.

(One day I'll take the time to figure out how that works, I promise. )

Have a nice day everyone.

Cheers,

Tobias

While Hamers are more scarce in Europe and generally much appreciated in Germany,

I didn't see that coming. No way I would have gone that high.

But maybe I'm just clueless.

Tobias

YIKES!

That is just insane. From a seller who does not reply to questions. And no serial no. And no case.

I thought around the four hundred mark was perhaps fair, after all the pups and hard ware has some value of it's own.

After that one is fixed it will have cost the buyer what he could get a nice un-damaged 70's Sunburst for. With a case, and with a legit serial number.

The stoopidity of ebay never seases to amaze me.

eBay isn't stupid - it's the people on it!
