Pay it forward: Volume Box

The volume box goes into the effects loop of your amp and is used to control volume to get the sound you want at a lower level. It works o.k but I have no use for it. Offered to the first Hamerite that emails me.

Teleman :D

Teleman

I heard these are good for the Fender Hotrod Deville. I need to get one so I can use mine for gigs.

Hey DavidE, I have one. I bought it to try to tame my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. In summary, I don't use it. For a number of reasons.

1) The VolBox certainly does the job as advertised. It allows you to crank up the VOL & Master VOL on your Hot Rod, then the VolBox dials the final output volume back to less than ear bleeding levels. But my experience was that as the final volume gets rolled back the final tone gets thinner.

2) Ya know how that MasterVol knob on your Hot Rod is hyper-sensitive? The difference between having it set at 1 and set at 2 is massive. All the truly useable operating range seems to be between 1/2 and 4? Well, again in my own personal experience, the VolBox has the same issue. In my case its range was between 9 o'clock and noon. So the end result is that your rig is stilll as sensitive to minute changes as it was before.

3) The effects loop is spoken for by the Vol Box and I ended up needing it for a trem pedal.

4) I got decent results in taming the HotRod by changing the V2 & V3 preamp tubes to 12AY7. Go here for other tips: http://studentweb.eku.edu/justin_holton/

5) The VolBox was one more thing (plus 2 more cables) to remember to drag to a gig and drag home from a gig. In my case, simpler is better, so I'm better off without it.

6) I thought that perhaps it was just an issue with the Hot Rod. So I tried it with a Mesa Blue Angel and a Matchless Clubman. Same result.

So the VolBox does what its advertised to do. But it didn't work out for me. A $20 experiment, no big woooop.
