Holloskull Warning

I spoke with that seller via email.

He refuses to accept anything short of postal money orders or cashier's check.

He will not accept a wire transfer, has no home address and claims to be working on a construction site in Buffalo.

He has a construction consulting company, under the same name, MarXway which he registered in Las Vegas two years ago. He also provided an address in Edmonds, Washington, which turns out to be a mail boxes place.

I requested more information prior to sending payment and he went off on a rant that I was engaging in character assasination and that he did not need me and he had plenty of other customers here he will contact once his suspention is lifted, I guess it's timed?

I would be very cautious of mailing money to someone in Buffalo, who has a LLC registered in Vegas, but provides a home address of a private PO box in Washington.

I'm going to pass on this one, too much risk, on a seller who listed the item for months on Buffalo's Craigslist, to never complete a transaction. Then on two occassions tried to run eBay style auctions here.

He has an eBay account but refuses to list the item there, BECAUSE you have to accept an electronic form of payment like Paypal.

His phone number is a Verizon cell based in Seattle. He is unmarried and has no children or real estate assets to track him down to later if necessary.

He said he would ship the guitar a few weeks after receiving payment, when he could "get around to it".

His name is Mark Shawn and his email is "marky mark".

Cmatthes smelled a rat and acted on it. Props to you, Chris, for booting out that clown. :D

Marky Mark, LOL

Yeah wonder if he uses that one for busness. No webpage or real email address, just a throw away public one.

You'd think he'd have a minimal web presence and a email like, mark.shawn@marXway.com

After I told him I was no longer interested in the transaction, he has continued to email me. This is the latest coorispondence.

Too funny, well if that's true then not only I will be filing a complaint against you for openly and falsely slandering me on the site which will have serious repercussions I'm sure, it will soon be shown to everyone that you LIED about our interactions just because you cant have things your way, are a sore loser, and a "faux buyer"! You just did just exactly what I suspected you would do and just as others had warned me about YOU, so I'm not worried in the least! I will be forwarding to the administrators, every single email that we've traded and the legitimate information I've provided... you're about to look very very bad in the eyes of your peers because of an obviously childish and bitter move on your part, hope you enjoy your disgrace while someone else enjoys the guitar you will never own.

That's insane!!! You probably just saved yourself from losing $2800. Good job buddy. I collect Ernieball EVH's and to get them I have to send the cash to the US, I have done this numerous times and I have a shit every time I do it. I was emailing that guy when it first went up, numerous times and he never replied back. Thank god you did a background check.

We don't condone bashing members here, so let's please make sure we refrain from doing that.

It is definitely critical however, to know your trading partners, and to have a level of trust and comfort when engaging in a transaction that is done over the internet. Trust involves freely sharing verifiable information on both sides when there isn't a personal relationship or prior involvement. Things like PayPal, EBay, and most credit cards, for all their warts and flaws, at least offer some sort of protection for both parties. It is important to be extremely cautious with ANY transaction, and if you aren't 100% comfortable with things, it is usually better to just walk away.

I know this doesn't need to be said, but sometimes it is easy to get caught up in things when there's something rare or unusual hanging on the other end of the monitor.

Fwiw he was willing to accept $3,200 from me to do a quick transaction, but said he had far better offers here via PMs. His ban prevented him from being able to contact others but he had already emailed me direct prior and had my info, and that was why he reached out to me, or do I was told.

Had the same issue with another seller.

Even for folks like... er, nevermind. ;)

Always the responsible & objective buzzkill, Cmatthes!

Since his stated selling price was $1,800, and he assurred me in an email that THAT would be the selling price to the first person to show up with ready funds, the hunch that he was running a faux auction seems to be verified.

Why he just doesn't put it on eBay, I don't understand. It would be a lot less hassle than trying to screw people over behind the scenes of an internet message board.

This is one of the MANY reasons we have a strict policy on auction style FS ads...

Probably because of the safeguards against chicanery.

This is why we love this site! People help people & that's good! If I'd never come here, I'd never have a Hamer (a real US Hamer) = I have 2 now & I love 'em. Give yourselves a pat on the back guys :D

Word of the day:

"Chicanery". I'm going to start using this in place of hijinks and shenanigans for the next month!

That guitar was for trade on Syracuse CL a couple years ago, the ad stated he was looking to trade the guitar for a Harley IIRC. I sent numerous e-mails inquiring about a cash in hand/local deal and received one reply back stating he was getting sick of people e-mailing him and that a studio musician had previously owned the guitar (no mention of a cash price though). The guitar showed up again on Syracuse CL this past May/June with a price ($1,800 IIRC) and later here on the HFC, but at that point I had long since moved on. Real cool guitar judging by the pictures, so hopefully the saga has a happy ending for someone trying to work out a deal with the seller. That being said there are other holoskull guitars out there, so be patient and persistent with searching if this one isn't meant to be.

It's a simple process; buy the seller not the guitar.

It's a two-way street.

If it doesn't feel right - for either party - walk away.
