ARM OF HAMER Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Hi Guys, STILL looking for that elusive 78-79 BLACK Sunburst. I did see a nice one here awhile back on the HFC but the seller was in the UK and would not to ship so.............lost that one and that has been the only one in BLACK I have seen for sale. There has been quite a few of the CSB "SUNBURST"s up on Ebay and else where. There was that one recently on Ebay with the 'Mini' switch add to split the bridge humbucker........... nice but I passed. There is another CSB "STUDIO" on Ebay as we speak but again not exactly what I'm looking for, cool though but with a very premium price.http://www.ebay.com/itm/2000-HAMER-USA-STUDIO-CUSTOM-highly-figured-Tiger-flame-Amberburst-Top-MINT-/330962464321?pt=Guitar&hash=item4d0ee66e41 I found one other for sale [http://www.gbase.com/gear/byid/3195240 for $2,500[ I emailed them and was given that price] it is all original and in great condition.
ARM OF HAMER Posted July 21, 2013 Author Posted July 21, 2013 True as far as the price but.................go find another...........even in CSB not the Black one you had its a tough guitar to come across, I'd buy the Black Sunburst on Ebay right now IF I was really hard up for a Black one but its been on there forever and it was overpriced BEFORE they jacked the price still higher!
tmsfo Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Yeah, $2500 is steep. If it was perfect I think about $1700 or so.
The Shark Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I looked for one under 2K for a long time. If you're buying it to keep, pay the premium. You won't regret it. And your search will be over. I paid the premium for mine. Never thought about it once, after the guitar showed up.
ARM OF HAMER Posted July 25, 2013 Author Posted July 25, 2013 Brent, Hey hope you were able to score "THE BURST" that is a VERY nice guitar for sure despite the higher $$$$ but hey isn't that always the case with rare premium examples of the guitars we want? I still want a basic Black Sunburst from 78-79 but they just never seem to be for sale............. anywhere. Only one I have seen for sale was that one from last Jan/Feb that sold on Ebay and of course the one you had and sold. Why is it that you never see these Black Sunbursts.......... were there that few made that were also "Bound and Crowned"?
ARM OF HAMER Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 Can you give me a number as far production for Hamer "Sunbursts"[78-79] in the Black finish that are bound and crowned? Are we talking a couple hundred produced or less than that. I do see the dot fingerboard models in Black come up now and then...............also the CSB with the dots. Hope Brent was able to shake that one loose from California Vintage Guitar. VERY cool guitar but still not the one I want and if you going to pay something like that for a price you might as well get the one you really want...........I'll never sell it so...............go to my grave guitar.

I paid the premium for mine. Never thought about it once, after the guitar showed up.And that is a good thing. One thing the Pre 79's are not and that is consistent. I'm not talking quality, just they are all so different, specially the neck carves. Oh and find one not missing any of the pieces or has been broken. Arm of Hamer if you find a good one, you must dig deep. You can find deals out there but if one is in hand and sounds and feels good, nail it.
ARM OF HAMER Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 Good to know...............I have read here that they had issues of various types as well related to the neck as far as twisting bowing and so forth,as they were just starting out with Hamers back in 78-79 and all were hand built I'm sure the neck shapes are different, many I understand were very thin as far as profile which may account for the neck issues. When I see the one I want I will pounce! Like Shark says worth the extra coin just to have it then your done...............who knows when you may see another.

Unfortunately, my eyes aren't that great of late, so it's a struggle to read what I have! I think it's on this board somewhere in a post from years ago, but its more like ten or so from 78 and probably less than 100 for 79 (B & C). It's been ages since I logged all of the numbers, but its low.Wait... Here's a link:http://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/topic/33010-natural-sunbursts-from-the-70s/?hl=+sunburst%20+finishes%20+black%20+cherry
ARM OF HAMER Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 WOW! I guess I had no idea they were that scarce! So a black finished B&C 78 would be a needle in a haystack guitar to find...........and with all original parts and with no repairs. The 79 would be the one to score for me then as 100 gives me somewhat a chance as opposed to the 10 from 78..............not that I would not take one if I found it : ).So how would a say a 82 compare to the 78-79? is there all that much difference as far as far as details? WOULD a DOT model be a better thing rather than a "Bound and Crowned" model from those years due to the neck issues with the B&C model Sunburst..............or just the early ones in general?
ARM OF HAMER Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 Does this control cavity look correct for a 1982?
ARM OF HAMER Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 Strap button seems to be in a odd place as well.............I don't see a plugged hole though from these photos though there be one.
ARM OF HAMER Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 This sure looks nice................reissue from 2000?....................Special Run? I Do like this guitar, yeah its not black but VERY cool and I would guess pretty hard to come across as well.
Bobby Marshall Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Hamer sunburst have an offset bottom strap button so you can actually stand up the guitar and it won't fall over. Very good design.Pre 1979 sunbursts have wide bridges and strings don't always? line up well with the pickup poles. 79 seems to be the year they fine tuned them and I think it is widely held around here that 79 is probably the best year in general. I have an 82 special as well. Get something without breaks from 79-83 and put in pickups to taste. Great guitars.
serial Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Cavity looks ok to me. The body is slightly different. I had a killer natural 82.
Caddie Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Dr. G.A.S. sezHmmm...son it sounds like you have the symptoms of "Martin Barre Syndrome". IIRC the Jethro Tull guitarist frequently brandished a Hamer a late 70's, Sunburst in Black.caddie
ARM OF HAMER Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 Sure one of my favs groups from back in the day saw them many times, Barre was/is a incredible guitarist.
Caddie Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Unless I missed something isn't this precisely what u r looking for? Black Sunburst on ebay Some of your pictures look like they came from this ebay listing. Bricks n Mortar dealer. $1795 Buy It Now. Too much blood for ya? No harm in calling them up n making an offer?caddie
ARM OF HAMER Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 Yep that is where I pulled the pics for referencing that model year and the details................this guitar has been up for sale forever [YEARS] it seems.................been discussed here on THFC many times.............it would be gone by now for sure except for the price............which they just raised BTW, sure a offer could be made and I'll bet some have but obviously non close enough to score it. Cool guitar though, gold sustain bridge, all the right wear,no breaks................. original except for the bridge PUP ring it looks like. Whats not to like? The price keeps it from being someone else's guitar"Portland Music" is just keeping it till they get what they want hence its STILL there.Tempting overpriced though it is.
HamStd Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Does this control cavity look correct for a 1982? OP, It could be me and I don't have a sunburst in front of me to compare (I'll pull the backplate off one and post pics), but the soldering in this one looks really sloppy for original Hamer work. Clearly they changed the bridge pickup and that is reflected by that gigantic glob of solder sitting on the pot, but the colored wiring looks funky to me, the soldering to the tone pot looks changed and it is hard to tell if the tone capacitor is original as well. Things to consider on the guitar. They don't pop up every day and you certainly don't see a lot of gold sustain block bridges walking around either. Peter
HamStd Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 This sure looks nice................reissue from 2000?....................Special Run? I Do like this guitar, yeah its not black but VERY cool and I would guess pretty hard to come across as well. That looks like one of the original HFC SB77 guitars from 2000. That looks like Eric B.'s old sunburst. I think at the time there was only 1 or possibly 2 done with a quilt top. Nice guitar, they play and sound GREAT. Sort of like a re-interpretation of the original with a lot more "ummph" !!! Peter
Stafford Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Can someone let me know where the HFC SB77 is for sale? I'm interested. Thanks
