Fretboard separating from neck... Possible causes?

So this morning the seller of the Greco I've found said he was contacted by a potential buyer who said the damage to the sides of the fretboard (previously disclosed) might indicate that the truss rod was overtightened and the fretboard popped up and had to be glued back down. Without my prompting, he offered a decent discount as a result.

Does that sound like the likely cause? What else could it be? I'd like to know if there's longer term repercussions of something like this aside from the obvious chipping around the joint and what I should be looking for/checking if I decide to go through with it. I'm after a player, and I know it's not like the truss rod was grown in there, so I'm thinking it's likely to be no big deal as long as the price accounts for it, but I'd like to be sure.

Edit: Here's a gallery with some pics from the seller.

Thanks all!

p.s. I spoke to the seller last night and my spider sense didn't tingle or anything. He's known for days that we'd do the sale in person if it happened. After we spoke last night and I'd agreed to his asking price, he came back and disclosed this. So good on him for that and I've got no suspicions of misconduct at this point.

p.p.s. How do I add an attachment to a post? :)

from the pics, not much of an issue to be overly concerned.

de lamination is common on the older stuff.

it is a symptom with a relatively quick fix.

I have also heard of fretboard separation because of over tightening the truss rod. That's why the standard advice is to never tighten more than a quarter of a turn at a time, and don't tighten again for several hours to give the adjustment time to settle.

I'm secretly hoping this might happen on my white SS1 std...That means I might be able to accidentally have to replace the Fb with an Ebony FB wot might have something lookin like boomers on it :)

But it hasn't...

So I can't.

It would probably cost the same to just replace it, but I suppose it's less easy to justify that way. ;)
