Jakeboy Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 If they made a firebird kit.....,still I am thinking a wraptail explorer would be so cool.....

Jakeboy Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Dude! I am very interested in how it turns out. I am considering the explorer with the Korina Tung oiled......
aknapp Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Dude! I am very interested in how it turns out. I am considering the explorer with the Korina Tung oiled...... That would look killer! And quite easy to do, too.
cmatthes Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 I'm not so sure about their version of the Explorer though. Something looks way off about it...
murkat Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 I'm not so sure about their version of the Explorer though. Something looks way off about it...agreed.more "pointy", kinda like what warmoth attempted to offer...it aint right, not even near when gibby modified it from historic blueprints late 70's on.Hamer standard, Gibson Historic are correct explorer body shapes
Ting Ho Dung Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Michael,That web link is no good.Sorry Dudes. Ditto - no dice.Sorry Dudes.Seems to be a members only forum.Sorry Dudes.
jaberwock Posted May 29, 2014 Author Posted May 29, 2014 They're sending me two mahogany off cuts, so I can reshape the headstock, which is too narrow, and flared, to a more " classical" outline; I'll remove the maple veneer. glue on the two "wings " bandsaw to shape, and glue on an ebony veneer. I'll design a logo and get it inlayed in mother of pearl.Part of what attracted me to these kits is that the wood is unfinished, so you have a fair amount of leeway for reshaping to your own desires; I'll be putting in a subtle tummy cut, and taking some of the sharpness off the the heel joint, to make playing the upper frets more comfortable. dhuber Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 The LP can't be any worse than anything Gibson puts out.
Montelovesco Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 The LP can't be any worse than anything Gibson puts out. You haven't seen my built...
jaberwock Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 I have reshaped the headstock, removed the original maple veneer, and replaced it with an ebony one. The body, and neck sanded, and sealed, and ready to be glued tonight. I'm not sure I'd describe the neck as quarter sawn mahogany, and the binding doesn't fully cover the maple cap in the neck cut away, but overall the quality is very good, particularly the neck tenon joint.http://s867.photobucket.com/user/markdlgdesign/library/LeS%20Paul%20kit%20build Jaberwock
Montelovesco Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 A KISS quota comes to my mind, don't know from which song:"And she's young and clean..."Fine work.
Armitage Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 Christine Sixteen; "Shes been around, but shes young and clean..."God why do I remember that, I can't even remember my cell phone number.P.S. is it ever creepy hearing Gene sing that now...
jaberwock Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 Neck glued, and my attempt at a "lemon drop " top; afterwards I sprayed the back, sides and neck with a warm red stain, the natural mahogany was looking a little cold next to that amber top. Jaberwock
gtone Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Looking good so far - keep us posted on your progress!
