Looking for a Versatile Fuzz Pedal

Question

Posted

My wife and I are doing a Garbage tribute set for Halloween, which is an annual tribute night in Madison. I will need something with sustain and some low rumble. I have an older Boss Hyper Fuzz, but it's slightly unmanageable and doesn't always play well with other pedals.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Dan

Maybe try a clip of the Hoof fuzz, see if that's your thing. It's based on the green Russian Muff.

Basic Audio builds all flavours of fuzz and unlike many I've tried, his are actually quite musical and not one trick ponies. Their Scarab Deluxe has a reputation for versatility among fuzzes.

Levi at LS Effects will make a Fuzzy Wuzzy which is a silicon fuzz pedal with a switch allowing you to choose either a fuzz face or a Tonebender II. It was just perfect classic fuzz. I traded mine in a fit of idiocy. I need another....

Your search is over…The Boss YM-69

If it's not too late, I really like (but don't have) everything I've heard on the Earthquaker Hoof (+1 GTone) and think this is a really versatile setup, especially in their Hoof Reaper pedal:

Two fuzzes and an octave effect all in the same box.

ETA: I use a Lovepedal BBB (2011) - it's a Tonebender and Fuzzface circuit in one small box with a blend knob between the two. I really like it, but they're kind of hard to find. The Hoof or especially the Manx Loaghton (with its Baxandall EQ) would probably be more versatile for you.

I'm a little biased.. PTD Bone Series are top notch.. Burning Sensation is a monster..

Unreal headroom, volume knob clean-up, amp-like gain at lower settings.

There's a long wait beyond October, but Paul is worth keeping an eye on (out for).

If you want something affordable, versatile, and that you can try out at any shop, I recommend a Way Huge Swollen Pickle. The EQ on it is handy and it can go from moderate distortion to all-out fuzz. As a long-time Garbage fan (seen 'em several times) I think I know what you're aiming for.

You'll need to borrow CMatthes' Steve Marker Bluesbird that I rather foolishly sold him a few years back to complete the sound :)

If the Swollen Pickle lasts more than 4 hours, you'll need to call a doctor (or find more women...). ;)

The Swollen Pickle is best in Viagra mode but is ever ready to please when set to full on Cialis.

Makes the girls sing in violin tone from what I'm told!

Have you ever tried a ZVex Fuzz-factory ? There is a lifetime of tone exploration in that little box . It is VERY interactive with the volume on your guitar . You will want to keep a blank pad of paper close by to write down all the cool settings you come across . I have had one for 15+ years and still stumble onto new tones almost every time I use it . I have yet to come across a more versatile pedal . Happy hunting .
