Jakeboy Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Maybe I missed it, but have we received any insight into the neck profile and carve on the Ultimates? I for one, love the early 2000s vintage carve, but I will defer to the builder unless he offers choices. What were the 4 digit neck carves like? This is getting crazy exciting.Mark
soli'd Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 My korina special is from 2007 and has a nice chunky neck, but with more D shaped shoulders than I typically prefer. I have, however, grown pretty accustomed to it, and the flat-ish spot for my thumb feels right now. Still, if choosing specs, R9 shapes still feel best in my hand (round back, .88-.96).
Jakeboy Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 My KORINA Special JR has that same carve and it is my second fave....but the 2001 Vintage carve on my Artist is simply perfect for my hand....
velorush Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 I had the same question, but figured it would come up whenever Mr. Shishkov gets around to my Ultimate. I figure he can do about anything anyone would want and his familiarity with the Hamer carves gives him a decided advantage for those who like them. That said, the Kiz' Senior ('03 vintage carve) is just near perfect. The only neck I like better is my Strat, which is fantastic C, nearly symmetric at 0.98 - 1.00, but my preference may be due to the guitar's scale rather than the thickness. I've never measured the Senior, nor have I measured my '59 carve Gibby. I should do that some time.
polara Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Yeah, I'm curious too. I'm assuming that when our number comes up for neck carvin' and gluin' time Mr. S will ask what we like.Another early 2000s vintage carve here. I'm not super finicky: I don't get sore hands and am insensitive to scale. I just like that substantial feel. Not a baseball bat, but a little depth and heft.
serial Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Most of my earlier four digits have a carve like a '61 SG/LP if I could describe it. Not meaty, but no pencil. Probably a perfect medium neck.
Northfield Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 The standard carve for the Ultimates will be a nice oval to round feel. Generally about .880 at the 1st fret, .925 at the 12th fret. Each one is hand carved so there will be some slight variation from neck to neck. I have had some specific requests for chunkier carves, which I am happy to accommodate.
Jakeboy Posted November 13, 2014 Author Posted November 13, 2014 Mike, I am on business travel with no access to my calipers or my 2001 Artist. How does the carve you describe compare to an early 2000s vintage carve?

Jakeboy Posted November 13, 2014 Author Posted November 13, 2014 OMG! I will now order another bourbon and Sprite in your honor , Mike!

Sounds like a perfect chunk of wood right there.

Add me to the chunkier carve list
polara Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Sounds like I'll be happy with the off-the-shelf carve. I have somehow gotten up to three Hamers now: '94 Studio, '95 Duotone and '89 Chapparal. They're all medium-ish whereas my old 2000 Artist had a big ol' chubby but I can deal with anything in that range.
