zorrow Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 ...and boy he never ceases to amaze me. He nails Uli Jon Roth's stuff perfectly, and then some. What a great player!Well, I had already praised him here several years ago, when I watched the Scorpions show at Wacken with Uli and Michael Schenker. He shone on his own in spite of sharing the stage with those other two monsters. But now I'm getting even more convinced about his greatness. What a competent rock guitarist Matthias Jabs is! WOW!
Biz Prof Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Superb player. Wish he had adopted the Standard as his standard.
Armitage Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Matthias Jabs... world class touch, tone and taste.
tommy p Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I never hear him come up when people talk about hot players, but he's right up there for me.
KofSeattle Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 One of my favorite bands. They sounded great live!
LordsoftheJungle Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I've never had many records and my only Scorps was "Blackout" until recently when I bought the "Box of Scorpions",,,, Holy Crap! just a ridiculous number of great songs that didn't receive much air time, no doubt there are many more songs that didn't make it onto the box set! Definitely one of my best buys,,,
zorrow Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 OK guys, you asked for it, so I uploaded it to FileDropper and here's the link: Scorpions Live 1979 in Tokyo, with Matthias Jabs. When the page above will show, just click on the "Download This File" button, then enter the asked characters and finally click on the "Download Now" button. I tried it and it's pretty fast. Please let me know if you get it properly.PS: Edited to fix the link.

Navigator Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Hey thanks for the link! It's easy to overlook Matthias Jabs as he had some huge shoes to fill following Uli Roth and Michael Schenker. But he burns really nicely here for sure. He's not quite as speedy as the others, but there's an intensity to his playing (especially here) that's so cool. Plus Lovedrive-era Scorps are my fave. Have you seen the video to match the audio? I suspect it's the same show--Tokyo 1979. Appears it was filmed for a Japanese TV show. Now on YouTube. Lucky us:
Bluesking Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Thanks for the download. On a related note, Uli is releasing a new album this Spring with classic Scorps tunes:http://www.guitarworld.com/uli-jon-roth-revisits-his-scoprions-days-new-album
it's me HHB Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 All those Germans played with an intensity that really moves me
BubbaVO Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Matthias Jabs and Rudolph Schenker were always the sound of the Scorps to me. I was late to the band and got into them with Blackout and Love Drive. I always enjoyed their playing.
it's me HHB Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I had Tokyo Tapes in high school before Love drive. Uli will always bey fav scorp ( yikes tiger beat lol )
zorrow Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 I had Tokyo Tapes in high school before Love drive. Uli will always bey fav scorp ( yikes tiger beat lol )In my case, my first exposure to them was "Taken By Force". I used to play that one with my friends over and over. That's how I noticed Urlich Roth. Eventually that "Gold Ballads" EP (or whatever its title was -now I'm lazy to Google it) also fell into my hands. Those two, plus the omnipresent "Winds Of Change" on the radio, it was almost everything I knew about the Scorps for a long time. But now of course I own their entire discography. I tend however to overlook Matthias Jabs' work in favor of Uli's. I guess then it's time for me to have a closer look to Matthias' playing, as he definitively is a great rock guitarist.
ZR Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Started when I heard Lovedrive in high school. They use to let us bring these big ass cassette players (some were about 2'x2'!) fully cranked at lunch and between classes in CA. It was "Lovin' you Sunday Morning" Then it was the Animal Magetism album then the rest of the older Uli stuff. I held on for several more albums then the newer stuff didn't do it for me although some of it was good. They are still my fav band I've seen live. The energy that they exude on stage makes me think of a traveling gypsy show where they are playing for whatever tips they can get...weird I know!
it's me HHB Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I saw em at Alpine Valley w Jabs and man, ZR is right
BTMN Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Scorps Live in the Day? OH Man, more energy than 3 bands. Matthias and Rudy will always be one of my favorite guitar tandems. Edited To Add:
Bluesking Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I saw them on the Monsters of Rock Tour in 1988.They were awesome and Jabs was smoking that day. I was also surprised at how many of the leads that Rudolph was doing.I didn't know squat about the 70s Scorps until much later - somebody mentioned Uli Roth in an interview and it took off from there. For me, Uli-Era and Jabs-Era Scorpions are two different bands.
DaveL Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I was lucky enough to see the scorpions opening for rainbow on the blackout tour... they were amazing... so good, tight powerful set, really pro... and then rainbow came on, organ solos, endless noodling, blackmore smashed a cheap strat copy and his wig fell off(ok that didn' happen)... but there's was no doubt who won the night. and riot was the opener... we got to watch them from the first few rows. winning!
