I see these ALL-THE-TIME, is there a reason to avoid them?

I really want to get away from my Tascam stand-alone deck. I really want to get into recording to a "shareable" format. that I can edit more visually. It is tough doing any editing on my Tascam 2488.

I don't need the Newest software, it's probably overkill for what I can do. I can't see buying a new computer/Hardware and then doubling that price for the software.

If it is worth it, I'll wait until I can afford the new computer, and order the software.

what are the advantages of buying new verses somebody's old setup?

I don't know really. The question is how many people are getting rid of them? There are so many DAWs available now that only need a decent input device to record and produce music on a computer. The "free" garageband that comes with every mac is a really capable recording system. The cheapest mac in a mac mini for around $500 +. You can get other DAWs on PC without getting the full specced versions fairly cheap also. Pro tools is an industry standard but you can still share projects from any DAW with a little extra work.

For $700 used, I rather have an upgraded mac mini refurb using garageband then upgrade to logic later if I need more professional tools.

Just my opinion.

I would get the last version that didn't require the I-Lock thing and rock. My pro tools setup is a digi-001 circa 2001 or 2002! The computer is a gray G4 tower. It's never been online and still works like the day it was new. 8 ins and 8 outs at 48.8 is enough for most of my demos and small projects. Anything more needed and I go to a real studio.

I have an older version of Logic that iirc works on mac or pc I'd sell for about nothing plus shipping. Should work on an older computer if you have an input device.
