Having successfully completed the HA Cali, I have turned my attention to a few lingering items I've wanted to address and have put off for far too long. Not the least of which is the LP Axcess that, at lead volume, shrieked like a banshee, with feedback. At Murkat's beckoning, I sent the wayward Murkat Special back to him and he repaired the mis-spec-ed p'up. I popped it back in and strung her up and she sings real purdy now. Damned fine p'up, Mr. Kolanda! Mighty fine in that 'hog Lester.

The next project in queue was the Godzilla Cali. Nothing wrong with it... other than the EMG 81/SA in there. Yuck. Decided to put a right proper passive set in so,  along with my go-to neck p'up, the SD Hot Rails, I dropped in a nice thick 'n' chunky SD Pegasus. I'm finishing up the soldering tomorrow am but everything's coming together nicely thus far. I put a Pegasus in my purple LE and while it's supposedly for "new metal", to my ears (and thru my rig) it has nice warmth, clarity and definition without the sludge and/or scooping. Beefy lil' critter for those wishing to try one out.

The last project that I'll be tackling this week is the Jackson Dinky Rev. Putting on a new locking nut and trem as well as a new set of Dimarzio's <GASP>  "What?" you exclaim! "Why the switch Dimarzios after years and years of faithful Duncan loyalty?"  Because I can, folks. LOL  Why not? The Liquifire and Crunch Lab set were good enough for John Petrucci at one point. Curious to hear them on a 500K pot, in a basswood Dinky w/ maple neck/board. If it passes muster, I'll likely drop a toggle in there and eventually give it some proper garish finish and tie it into the hue of the p'ups. ;)

According to certain mods, it's something I'm doing but nonetheless I've been stymied 3 times trying to post here. Hopefully this will go through.

The ill-fated Jackson Dinky Rev I acquired a few weeks back has now been Diablo-cized to the extent that my meager skill sets will allow for. She's been gutted, cleaned up and buffed out, gotten new p'ups, pot, trem (and assorted accessories) and toggle switch installed and is awaiting the fret dressing. This is where the ill-fated part comes in: the guitar is not a keeper. Despite sounding, looking and playing significantly better than when she arrived, the neck profile is not working for me. Strange, because I've gotten along with almost every Jackson neck profile thus far. But it is what it is.

So, she needs some fret work. My options are: dump another 150 bucks into getting the frets leveled, crowned and polished and maybe even one or two replaced. OR- I can sell as is for a similar loss given it's fretting out on the B and E strings on 1.5+ step bends, between the 14th and the 17th. One other option would be to try my hand at fret dressing but am somewhat apprehensive about that due to the likelihood of a mishap and the resulting further devaluation of the guitar (beyond that of it's Diablo-cizing:rolleyes:) Besides, tree fiddy or not, it's still has potential for being a great shredder for someone.

Thoughts?

Jim, this is the perfect excuse for you to buy some tools and start doing leveling, crowning, and polishing yourself. I use cheap necks harvested from a Chinese Jackson and a no-name Tele to practice.

Then, with my muscle memory flexed, I go to work on a real piece like this HRR Strat.

Well after some thought, I decided to let my friend and guitar builder have at the frets of the DK as he was looking for some side work.

With that out of the way, I've shifted my focus to the new Dinky project- it's gotten a new Orig. Floyd and brass block, a new JB (for now) in the bridge and will be getting the Fernandes sustainer in the neck. The blade switch will be going bye bye for a proper toggle. Very excited to learn that I may have the opportunity to acquire a few more Murkat Special Floyd Specific bridge p'ups. One of them will likely be going in the DK2M project, the other into yet another new Cali project. heh heh heh

Some fun and exciting things in the works for the bench!

The Jackson Sustainer project is currently on hold until I have a chance to figure out exactly how (and if) it's to go into the newly acquired DK2M. Lately, I've been thinking the sustainer might be a better fit in my '10 Custom shop Charvel Star. Since the Charvel was originally ordered and delivered with active p'ups and a battery compartment and it now has passive p'ups, it would be well suited for that aspect of housing a sustainer. My only misgiving would be drilling holes in a Custom Shop ax for the mini toggles that activate the sustainer. That shit's pretty much non reversible. Need to be certain that I want it in there.

The second item for the bench is likely gonna create a little drama but too f-ing bad. I honored my promise to Hamerhead to leave the Iri Cali LE he sold me unmolested and as luck would have it, had another HFCer who was interested in swapping for his Cali LE from the same series, albeit with considerable wear and tear to the finish. In other words, ripe for modding to my hearts content. :D

So, Singlehum's Cali arrives tomorrow or Saturday and the following Tuesday, it goes in for new stainless frets. Depending on how the PATB in the bridge position currently strikes my fancy, it could get a new set of p'ups. Possibly a new set from Josh Gravelin. :o:ph34r: Naturally, she'll get a new trem but this is where the mods come out- I've been jonesing a Cali with a real-deal German Orig. Floyd for forever. The LockMeister and the Schaller Lic'd trems are very good but I suspect a OFR will be incredible. This requires the recess cavity be lengthened to accommodate the longer string screws ( I'm not putting the short ones on- I want a full-on 100% stock OFR on there). Also in keeping with past mods, she'll get a proper toggle switch in place of the blade. The blade slot and screw holes will be filled and the whole thing will get a loud Stike finish.

Singlehum's Cali LE (soon to be mine) with my old one- taken this am.

My only misgiving would be drilling holes in a Custom Shop ax for the mini toggles that activate the sustainer. That shit's pretty much non reversible. Need to be certain that I want it in there.

This requires the recess cavity be lengthened to accommodate the longer string screws ( I'm not putting the short ones on- I want a full-on 100% stock OFR on there).

Why not? Why would the screw length matter? Is it aesthetics?

Don't drill the CS Charvel, it's a rare guitar. Do the Dinky; it won't have much resale value, Sustainer-ed or not.

Probably doesn't matter... except for possibly affecting the performance in some minuscule, indiscernible-to-mere-mortals-way. For me, it's just the prospect of having an authentic, 100% stock OFR on it.

Jim, I'll tell you what I told my client who also wants to cut up a guitar in his stable for a Sustainer. I say "also" because oddly enough, my client is the same guy I mentioned in the "Diablo-oo-ooh" thread who goes batshit crazy when his Floyds don't go cent-perfect back to true zero from both push and pull directions. You two have a lot in common LOL.

I wouldn't cut up the Charvel for a Sustainer. I wouldn't cut up the Dinky for a Sustainer either. I told my client I don't recommend cutting up his stuff. I'd get a guitar already loaded with a Sustainer and use the small fortune you would pay to alter ANY body for a Sustainer to upgrade the already-done platform.

If it was me, I'd get a Fernandes Revolver Sustainer. They are readily available and affordable on the used market. MIJ and the quality you'd expect, plus alder body (yes, not bleh basswood), 24 fret, factory Floyd-license bridge 99.9 percent guaranteed to have been ghost-built by Gotoh and a factory bridge pickup that is plenty sufficient to not pull immediately. And I'd spend the money I would have thrown away on routing and cutting to make upgrades to the actual guitar, another addition to the stable versus a pile of sawdust and paint chips on my shop floor.

Or I'd get a MIJ Burny LP clone with a factory Floyd and factory Sustainer. Same principle as above. LTD also at one time had a good quality MIK Eclipse with factory Floyd and factory Sustainer.

All great suggestions except for the second-to-last sentence.

Good ideas!

The issue with getting a Fernandes Revolver (or any used guitar of heretofor unknown brand-age ) would be making sure it's got the mojo I need in a shredder. We all know having the requisite features and specs does NOT necessarily a good shredder make. So, unless a test drive on one is available, I'm left with hoping it has the mojo. We'll call it gamble. If it doesn't have the mojo, I'm then saddled with the PITA of flipping it.  I've done far too much of that already.

As for the Burny and Eclipse, not really a suitable platform for sustainer as they really don't qualify as true "shredders" in my book. Despite their homage to the iconic LP design, they're still 22 frets and 24.75" scale. If I am to put a sustainer into anything, it will be a shredder with 25.5" scale, 24 (or more) frets and of course, Floyd-ed. :D

I'll have to ponder this issue further.

In lieu of the sustainer switches, Sustainiac offers a pot with a pull up switch. So volume/sustainer on/off and tone/harmonic.

Nothing special about that Charvel or Dinky.  Make them work for you.

I already have a Fernandes Sustainer unit. The good news is the Jackson has ample room in the control cavity for the sustainer's circuit board. No routing needed!  The mini switches, according to Murkat, can be re-positioned from their current location on the circuit board. However, from the looks of it, I could position the motherboard over the tone pot hole (that pot is coming out of there!) using it for one of the mini switches and drill an additional small hole for the other mini switch. The blade selector would be taken out for a proper toggle switch.

Alas, the great Sustainer Project will be on hold indefinitely. After much thought and about an hour's playing time on the intended recipient of the Sustainer system, I've decided it's not worth the trouble of modding the f- outta the Dinky Pro. I've set my sights on acquiring a Fernandes Revolver w/ a factory Sustainer as was suggested by Jeff R above. If I dig the sustainer system in that, then I'll revisit the prospect of making a Sustainer guitar with specs completely in line with mine.

In the meantime...

The Cali conversion continues unabated. The paint scheme has been designed and the new equipment is acquired. First up is the pull up/recess cavity enlargement. Easily done on the appropriate router. The cavity will be enlarged to accept an stock OFR. Then all hardware will be removed from neck and the neck removed from the body and the whole kit and caboodle will go out to Mike Learn for a badass airbrushing of a concept I dreamt up recently. Additionally, he'll be putting some new JUMBO frets on the neck, but these will be the standard nickel silver variety. Stainless steel imparts a very slight trebly twang to the tone that I am desperately trying to avoid this time 'round. In addition to nickel/silver frets, I'll be looking to try a Murkat Special in this one. My concern is the Murkat I have in the Lester sounds fantastic but it's a short scale, 'hog w/ rosewood board guitar.  All warmer and crunchy items. The Cali has the 'hog body but a maple neck and an ebony board which can brighten things up along with the longer scale issue. Whataya say Jay? Can we get Josh to tweak one bridge to accommodate the longer scale and maple/ebony thing? I wanna keep the sizzle of a 500K pot but lose the hive of pissed off bees tone.

If and when you round up the Revolver that meets your criteria, plan on adding a jumbo refret to that too. Can't remember if I told you that. All the Fernandes and Burny guitars I've been around over the last 10 years had frets that were somewhat small for most shredder aficionados' tastes. But don't let that potential extra expenditure deter you - a.) a MIJ Revolver is a great platform of a guitar and b.) you may be cool with the OEM frets. Most Hamer shredders have small frets for my shredder tastes, if that sheds light on where I'm at.

Good to know. I can get along with the Hamer sized medium jumbos well enough- just prefer the jumbo jumbos. LOL That being said, I see this as only test platform. Sure, if it's badass in every other right, I'd keep it. But mostly, it's just about trying a Sustainer in a comparable shredder.

The Great Cali Diablo-ization continues.

Meatbomb extended the pull up rout to accommodate the OFR length screws and fingers are crossed that the posts are good enough that the saddles can be adjusted to compensate for the slight change in distance (compared to the Schaller Lic'd) from the nut. The blade slot's been filled and the hole for the toggle has been drilled in.

All hardware has been removed, along with the neck and it's all been boxed up and sent out for another Mike Learn treatment. Some may recall his work on the Godzilla Cali. I'm very much looking forward to what he does with my design concept. As Tom Petty sang- "the waiting is the hardest part"

Speaking of the Godzilla Cali, the neck should be back any day now from it's recent re-fret with SS Jumbos. It's been a long and oft times, frustrating journey to get it here but it's finally a fully realized and worthy player in the pantheon of gig worthy axes.
