Does my wife hate my guitar playing?

Ignoring it ain't so bad. It's when you hear them bitchin' about it is when you have a problem.

It means your amp ain't loud enough.

As for getting back in the Missus' good graces, just tell her "I'll get down on my knees if you'll get down on your elbows."

I knew my first marriage was gonna have problems when my soon-to-be spouse appeared in the movie at my bachelor party (a tip of the plagiarism hat to Rodney Dangerfield for that one).

I concur.....

What was the joke about a man choosing between his wife and his dog? He is gonna miss his wife?

The girlfriends & wives that never compliment our music are jealous because they are not a part of it & feel threatened. I was with a girl like that. If they were not jealous, they would say we are good even if they thought it sucked.

Here'a different take. My wife rarely comments on my playing or songwriting in any way. She only reluctantly ever came to my gigs in the era when I played out regularly. She has this problem where she can't see a live performer of any kind without being embarassed FOR them whether they are good or not. Her own anxiety is such that she can't see someone live without feeling a measure of the fear she would feel if she were actually onstage herself. Weird, but not a big deal. I think there is also a degree of the jealousy factor mentioned earlier. She is a little jealous of the time devoted to music vs family. Either don't worry about her lack of comment or bring it up with her. I'm sure she's got a reason that makes sense to her.

Again, I concur. I hope this post isn't wasting too much curiosity. I wish I offered a more humorous viewpoint.

The guitar is a damn sexy instument and likely to provoke unmitigated jealous rages.

My Girlfriend however let me dedicate a whole room to nothing but gear!!! life is good again!! :o

Hey, me too. I have a whole wall devoted to my shredder guitars - Steve Stevens models mostly, about 30 of them hung up in a row. Then I have my amp array: Uberschall, Victoria, and a few others. And I have this insulated concrete block bunker that contains a 4x12 cabinet and a microphone, for recording. I get my band down there and we do our Dream Theatre set and it kills, especially with my flawless technique. My wife really supports me.

ha ha!

Sure...... LOL!

Edited to add: My wife has never commented on my playing... just my vocals. In 15 years, I've gone from none, to backing, to actually doing a portion of the band's lead vocals. I was not blessed with golden vocal chords. My wife reminds me of this every day, LOL.

My wifeiis generally pretty supportive. I've been going through the "it's time to quit cycle" since my last band of eight years came to an end. She keeps encouraging me to call my old music friends and got my some small music things for Christmas. She always tells me I'm a better player than I give myself credit for. I'm lucky to have her.

My wife is always asking if I could play "Far, Far Away".

Does anybody know where I can find the tab for that one?

I'm not married (dodged that bullet once or twice!), but I can relate this:

I had a very serious girlfriend who felt that when we were together by playing guitar I was "ignoring her"!?!? She always said she loved to hear me play, but had this need to have my full devoted attention all the time. In other words uber high maintenance.

My last serious girlfriend was also a musician. She was always pissed that all the songs I wrote did not have any elements of shred or difficult passages in them (it's not like I'm the next Steve Vai or anything...). She seemed to think I was "wasting my talent" because I like writing pop songs. Go figure. Of course it was the pop songs that sparked interest from the record company, which proceeded to make her more jealous. :o:P More of the story, don't date musicians. That's one too many people who like something that's totally opinionated and causes conflicts that serve absolutely not purpose (it's like arguing over ice cream flavors).

Now my parents on the other hand are both musical, but Dad was a guitarist in bands (mom is a singer, but not a rock musician, more classical/church based). I remember growing up and hearing my Mom tell everyone how good Dad was (and he is good). Mom's always encouraged him to play. He still gets together with friends and they play a lot of classic rock and old country. I liek to make it down and jam with them whne I get a chance. It's been a good bonding experiance since I started playing. Plus, growing up my dad was cool, he played guitar! :o:o

No one else got this, nor was I flagged for being mean, which was my intent. Dammit.

Nah, we got it. And you're much meaner with your everyday postings, so why would we flag this one?

My wife is happy I'm in a band again. Gets me out of the house, she says LOL!

I believe it is to the same rhythm as playing Solo.

So low you can't hear it.

H.Hokie:

I got ya, just trying to fit some work in-between my posts :o

My wife has always encouraged the things I enjoy, and vice-versa, so I guess I'm pretty lucky there. She actually likes guitars and has taken the time to learn a little bit about them, especially the vintage stuff.

I did date a girl in college who had gotten increasingly moody over the course of one particular month. Finally, she blew up and tearfully accused me of being more into my new Rickenbacker 12 string than I was her. Sheesh...guess she was right.

I've never made fun of someone whose wife divorced him before. I think I've hit a new low.

No one has ever said anything about my sig. Maybe they just ignore me all together. :o

Might this be the throne of which you speak?

That ain't right. lol

Relating to the original subject though.... If I close the door when I'm playing guitar and she also closes the door to the room where she is, I'm guessing she is not too interested in hearing what I'm playing. Of course maybe, I'm just taking it all wrong. :P

Mrs. blackfbiv supports me a ton. She's tolerates the growing 6-string thing, but is quick to remind me that I am a much better bass player. :)

She must know what she's talking about 'cause her previous long-time guy was a pretty amazing guitarist I'm told. (Not just by her, either.)

In fact she flew him to L.A. to audition for RHCP a long time back.

(in case you're interested, they thought he was a great player, just NOT what they were looking for)

I know that she would do whatever she was able to do to help me do or get anything I really wanted.

Doesn't appear that there will be any custom FB's offered by Hamer anytime soon, so I'm content.

I was asked to join yet another band this weekend (that's 2 in the last week (both new upstart country bands with seasoned gigging musicians) and 3 in the last month) and I asked my wife why all of these people want me in their bands. My wife was very complimentary about my playing (which is amazing after all of these years). So, that was sweet. Honestly, there are SO many better players around here. The listening public, and apparently many working musicians, can't tell the difference between a wanking hack (me) and some others who know their shit and play some really tasty stuff. Good for me.
