Chambered/ Weight Relieved and Feedback

Question

Posted

Do chambered or weight relieved guitars tend to feedback moreso than solid bodies? If so, how do you counter it?

I ask because my LP Axcess which IS weight relieved via chambering and tends to howl like a banshee (in a bad way) with feedback when I play at gig volume particularly when I hit the channel boost for a solo. Been battling this issue for years and it's the only remaining detrimental item in my bevy of stage axes. Have tried dropping the channel and/or FX setting's gain, have had the guitar looked at by a supposed certified luthier  who could not identify anything. Is the Murkat Floyd Special p'up too hot?

I've got several chambered guitars (not semi-hollow, but closed chambering).  I don't have that particular issue, even at higher volumes, but I'm also talking about Shlabotniks and (formerly) stock Hamer Duncans.

did you get it from me? or from Jim?

The pup may need to to be potted if obtained from Jim.

I have never had an issue of.

But I pot, re pot all my pickups I use.

I think I ordered directly from Jim.

Should I send mine to you for potting or should it be done locally?

On a somewhat related note ...

Saw a clinic video with Paul Gilbert recently and he was absolutely WAILING away on a F-hole'd semi-hollow in a high gain application. No over-the-top feedback, just the controllable feedback we guitar players crave. He said the trick he learned to control F-hole feedback at high volumes was from his friend and fellow Ibanez endorser George Benson.

Clear packaging tape over the F-holes. Effective uncontrollable feedback buster and invisible to most everyone not in on the secret.

Yep, that's paint. No transparent tape needed :)

A weight relieved Les Paul with a Floyd Rose just presents so many problems for me.  And singing sustain is exactly where both "mods" bother me.  If you weigh pros and cons, it might be a wash.  But I just can't get along with a Les Paul and a Floyd.  Chambered doesn't help.

I'm going to say that since Hamers are put together with the Right Amount of Glue, and a thick top cap, you aren't going to have any problem with howling feedback.

The Tally sounds great however.

Jim, did you gut the stock volume pots, stock push pull tone pots in it as well?

I posted a few years ago that GCS used the wrong pots for that as well, esp the push pull.

Most of the first, second gen Axxess's were assembled with 25k pots.

I think they were replaced but I can't honestly recall. No markings on there to identify them. The push pull does look new-ish. Let me get back to you on that. Might be able to track down the work order that details what was done.

Just for my edification, what type of pot should be used with your Murkat p'up?

yeah. roll the dice... take the push pull out (don't need to un solder)

look at the bottom (flip it, shaft side) of it where the solder tabs are, should read in small print what K it is.

I believe the P/P is/ was for single coil option on both pups, 1st, second gen (using a 25k P/P pot)

Never the less, I would suggest a complete new cpa if you really like playing it. with or without push pull.

At GCS, I re designed the next gen with dual P/P's, series / parallel. Way better  for the 498/490r combo than the former gens.

Shee-oot. Shoulda just sent you the entire guitar instead of just the p'up.

Maybe a road trip to Nashville is in order.

I was going to suggest fitting granite inserts into the  chambered sections.  I saw a graph on the internet that clearly showed the sonic supremacy of eastern PA granite over every other material.

But just do what murkat says.

I'm late to the party but my chambered Les Paul Classic has no feedback issues. I was going to mention the potting issue but looks like you got it resolved.
I had to wax pot all of the PUs on my Gibsons back in the 80s just to be able to gig with them. I still have my original can of wax from back then.

I always try foam under the pickups in the route before I do anything drastic

THAT trick WORKS!!!!!

I've also heard of the "old-school-ers" blowing up balloons inside the guitars to plug the holes and using condoms instead of balloons.
