Why not?  I thought one should always loosen the strings when shipping guitars/bass guitars to ease tension and the likelyhood of a snapped headstock while shipping.

I believe in loosening perhaps a half step in pitch to account for humidity and temp changes but I think you're asking for trouble relieving all of the tension from the neck. Why introduce an extreme change in neck tension before shipping? I have no 'science' to support my view, however.
