Play It Loud: Rock & Roll & Gear At The Met

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Saw a news report about this on BBC World News America tonight, with a bit of Jimmy Page showing off his Gibson SG Doubleneck and stage costume from 'The Song Remains The Same' concert movie.  He didn't play it though, as the guitar was attached to a mannequin wearing his stage outfit, and it was locked up in a case for the exhibit.  The BBC report also had a VERY brief shot of Rick Nielsen's Orange 5-neck Hamer (also in a display case), but no mention about it otherwise.  The BBC report hasn't shown up online yet, but CBS' Sunday Morning program already did a TV news item about the exhibit last week, featuring live demos by Steve Miller and Don Felder of their guitars in the exhibit, playing them IN the museum (gotta dig the 'natural hall reverb' of Felder's playing on the 'Hotel California' Gibson SG Doubleneck):

The exhibit starts April 8 and runs through October 1 in NYC:

I think its VERY cool that these iconic artists instruments are being displayed in a museum...................after all they ARE a great part of our musical history and really the guitars...............at least in my opinion ARE pieces of art. You see these  guitars and you say yeah that is the guitar that Rick played on ...............or John played on.......Don used for. I've seen that Moog of Emerson's more than a few times back in the day..................memories of a lifetime from long ago.

I'm pretty sure I've seen all of those pieces between my two trips to the R&RHoF; Moon's drums, Muddy's Tele, and of course Jimi's Woodstock Strat.
Really exciting to see this stuff in person and most people are probably never going to go to Cleveland to see them - lol.

I happen to be heading to NYC next weekend. I'm glad the timing is working out to check this out.

A bunch of this stuff has never been on display before, supposedly - that'll be cool!
