Definition of "legacy band", particularly as it relates to Cheap Trick

Recommended Posts

Perused an article recently about C.T., and the text referred to them as a "legacy band".

I've not heard or read the term before, so was that phrase synonymous with "classic rock band" (veterans still out there gettin' it done after decades) or was  it a reference to the fact that the band now has second-generation members...or did "legacy band" mean something else?

For that matter, other bands now have sons of earlier members, either playing with their sires (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Greg Kihn Band) or the offspring has replaced his deceased father (Ventures).

IMO, 'Legacy Band' probably refers to having second-generation members, or maybe includes unrelated members that somehow 'inherited' or were 'adopted' by the franchise; but any group that falls under that moniker is probably gonna be a 'classic rock band' anyway.

Luther Nallie had his brothers join him in The Sons Of The Pioneers.  A son played with the group, too.

Tracii Guns had his son in his band that was sort of L.A. Guns when there were two versions of L.A. Guns touring around.  Now they are combined, and Tracii's son is not part of the band.

The Allman Brothers have begat other bands.  Butch Trucks' nephew Derek Trucks is doing well.  Dickey Betts had his son, Duane, in Great Southern.  Now Duane Betts joined forces with Devon Allman (Gregg's son) to form The Allman Betts Band.

Sven Dirkschneider plays drums in U.D.O.

Carl Perkins had two sons playing in his band.

Queensrÿche has Parker Lundgren who was briefly married to Geoff Tate's daughter.  With Tate gone and the Lundgren divorce maybe the legacy ended.  Queensrÿche is still a good band.
