C'mon Man - Guitar Idiocy from the Interwebs

I like posting this stuff from time to time and don't see a reason for making a new thread every time I do.  So, in the spirit of my "random thoughts" thread, I thought I'd make a thread for stuff I say on the web - from the questionable to sublimely ridiculous.  Anyone else should feel free.

Guilty as charged, although my banning says as much about the place as it does about me.

LOL they didn't give him the chance.  And the mods don't ever reconsider their decisions, regardless of how hastily they may have made them.

And they're assholes.

Let's start with this thread: a bunch of jackasses complaining about taxes on Reverb sales and alleging that no one is using the platform anymore because of them, yet the whole premise of the thread is that nothing is selling privately and everything is selling on Reverb:

TGP threads sometime remind me of when I used to listen to Alex Jones' show when it was just local in Austin back around 2007.  Starts off with a perfectly interesting premise - hypothetically say like is the State of Texas abusing the ability of CPS to take children away from families without possibly enough due process.  OK, interesting topic, might be something to that.  I suppose I would worry about that myself.  But then just as you think there may be a cogent point, it goes totally off the rails.  "The real game here is taking these kids to use them in experiments in creating reptilian hybrids for the illuminati!"

I like seeing how many posts you can get in before the TGP equivalent of lizard people shows up.

But yeah, post that stuff here all you want.  I'd love to have a catalog of greatest hits to thumb through from time to time, haha.

88 San Dimas, huh.  From China, with a serial number in the 7800s... seems legit.

And is that ad title racist?

A consonant off but we still have a winner! Love the adhesive fret markers. and the chees-olah tuners. $2500. Sure. Uh huh.

Where/when I grew up, a 'dink' was slang for a penis. Or a jerky guy: you know, a dick.
Later it became a way to demean yuppies who had Double Income, No Kids.

I'm not aware of a racist angle, but someone please PM me before I unknowingly piss off some ethnicity!

I once got in a discussion with a TGP hamhead who stated "in a battle of tones a Les Paul always beats a PRS".  I don't think there is much point in a response, especially since I have never attended a tone battle.

This guitar has been on Reverb for three years.  Even after all that time, everything about it pisses me off.  If it's actually real, it's the ugliest custom order that I've ever seen.

It kind of looks like somebody's not-quite-finished woodshop project.

When running through the same rig, the older I get the more I start to think your hands, the way you attack the guitar, is maybe 75% of anyone's tone.  Whether it is a single coil or humbucker is the next 15%.  That last little bit is whatever combo of scale, type, etc.

I have a run of the mill American strat that can sound quite a bit different than say an LP when I really want that strat twang for this or that.  However, when playing lead, once I get it through my board with boost, verb, and a little delay into the lead channel of either the Budda or Friedman, roll the tone back a little bit, and start playing, it sounds a lot more like everything else I play than it sounds different.

Sure, there are things that humbuckers make easier and vice versa, and it does feel somewhat different trying to wrangle the same sort of lead tone to out of different axes to varying degrees.  Regardless, I think the actual outcome to the vast majority who come and see us play is a lead tone that sounds pretty consistently the same from guitar to guitar.

I wish I had had the money to buy that back then.

That would have been brutal... back when it was remotely relevant. What was it, 4 years ago? 5?  Glad it's still getting good mileage. These zombie topics are resilient buggers.

Not sure what you guys are seeing as racist...the word dink?

My first thought seeing the ad was Jackson / Charvel , dinky guitars.  Been around a long time.

That bit was a joke.  I certainly don't think that any of it is racist in actuality as much as a funny, inopportune typo.  Dinky is a bolt-on Jackson.

The other word was (and still is in some places) a slur against the Vietnamese that Americans soldiers and marines sometimes used during the Vietnam War.

Third definition:

https://www.dictionary.com/browse/dink

Brief history of the term:

http://www.rsdb.org/slur/dink

I certainly heard it used a a pejorative more than a few times growing up in Mississippi.  However, I don't want to get all serious here.  Like I said, I don't think the person selling that guitar is a racist, but I did think it was a pretty amusing typo or possibly unfortunate shortening of a term.
