G Man
Rats! This is going to be a long tough year. I've been in a couple of funk bands that have covered several of his songs, love Bill Withers, so smooth.
Steve Haynie
The first band I saw this year, Eli Yacinthe and his band, played Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone. Eli is a teenager, maybe 20, but he chose that song.

Willie G. Moseley
He did a good job on Grover Washington Jr.'s "Just the Two of Us"; only song w/ vocals on the Winelight album IIRC And another faded memory was Freddie King doing a blistering version of "Ain't No Sunshine" when he opened for Grand Funk RR. Think this was on a broadcast of "In Concert" back in the early '70s. There's also a very good uptempo version of "Lean On Me" by Michael Bolton: The Persuasions did a great acapella version of "Lean On Me" back in the day as well. Y'see, IMO one sign that someone was/is a respected artist is to what extent his/her own hit songs get covered by other artists, particularly when the covers are unique arrangements that stand on their own. Biz Prof
In recent years, I've realized that Withers was my all-time favorite R&B artist. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that he wrote and recorded songs that could be fairly described as timeless in quality. He was also a musician--a guitarist, no less--and that puts him leagues ahead of the crooners in my book.
LucSulla
Is it bad that I read that and thought, "Well, at least it wasn't COVID?" Seriously, I'm not making a joke.

I said the same thing when I heard about it this morning.
