Scotch?

hamerhead

Question

Don't drink the stuff myself, but as a gag I told my nephew I'd get him a bottle for helping me out. Name me a decent Scotch that isn't kerosene that's worthy of gag-giftness.

Find the right recipe.......

The JonBenét Ramsey: This is your classic Shirley Temple with a twist: Simply mix grenadine, a maraschino cherry, lemon-lime soda, and enough Scotch to make the unforgivable mistake of wetting the bed.

I was a scotch drinker for most of the 80's and  90's. Johnny Walker Red is a solid blend and a good introduction to the basic concept.  My favorite, before I transitioned to tequila, was Laphroig.  It's very much an acquired taste, with primary flavor notes of cilantro and ivory soap.

Johnny Walker, J&B or Dewars are a safe choice for a scotch newbie.  Avoid Passport or anything made in Japan!

Been around a long time. Smooth and subtle. Pesocaster's favorite (if I'm up-to-date). I like it too, and for a true Scottish12-yr-old single malt, it's reasonably priced. Speyside in origin, which is a pleasant balance between swampy lowland and too-smooth highland. Available in the USA.

I know nothing about Scotch but have a story: my first trip to Europe was to England and Scotland and I was determined to have haggis.  I went to a place and ordered it and when they brought it out they asked if I had ever had it before, which of course I had not.  The server said "well, then you're probably going to want a little Scottish gravy on that." and went away.  She came back with a brimming shot of Scotch and poured it on the haggis!  No, it wasn't great.
