Blue and Purple DC guitars!

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I'm new to the forum, but I have been an admirer of Hamer guitars for a long time.

From everything I have heard, the studios (and similar models) are as close to a LP in sound as you're gonna get, with a doublecut for upper fret access and zero heel.

So one of these days I would love to own one.

I know that its the tone that REALLY matters, but as you can see from my profile, I'm partial to blue and purple guitars.

I'm curious to know (and see) how many of the DC models out there were available/produced in a dark blue or purple color!

Please show me some of that blue/purple Hamer DC guitar porn! 🤘 😁🤘

Welcome! Best place in the net with the best people. Period.

And for the blue guitars - there is a physical (and scientifically proved) explanation why blue guitars sound better. The blue pigments react better to vibrations. There was a diagram somewhere (can't find it right now) comparing green pigments with blue and red ones. And you COULD see the difference...

Really.

Actually, the FM Special is a Special with a Flame Maple (FM) top. That‘s where the name come from.
But here are a lot more and better experts than I am...

Ahh yes I have done some research. Still a maple top (not sure how thick) but flat top and not carved.

Would love to hear some audio/video clips of these to see how they compare with, say, a studio or studio custom...

The 90’s special FM is going to sound pretty much exactly the same as a studio or studio custom. The only difference between the special FM and a studio is the flat maple top vs arched top on a studio. The differences between the studio and studio custom are purely cosmetic. The special FM has a pretty thick maple top, which differentiates itself from the early specials where the maple was a thin veneer. I had a ‘95 special FM that was just a monster player with a sick flamed top in Aztec gold. One of the ones I should’ve kept...

Good info to know! I don't suppose you have any sound/video clips from that guitar? 😁

Not me and doubtful this guitar was mine. But my 95 special FM looked exactly like this one. This is a special FM mislabeled as a studio.

Welcome to the boards wolfman! To be honest, you won’t hear any difference in tone of them guitars. Not only the names get mangled up. What you get is a big chunk of mahogany that’s making the LP sound, with a shade of a different wooden top. It's then the pickups that could make a real difference.

A double cut guitar has 2 cuts, correct?

So, would the Daytona be a double cut?

Depends. Would you count the “belly cut” as a cut?  Or would that be more of a “contour” like the forearm contour...

If you're partial to blue and purple, I can tell you that the Indigo Blue finish gives you one on each side.

Let's see now, I've had a Monaco Elite and a Studio in Indigo Blue, plus two other Blue or Blue/Green studios. The Monaco Elite has the best finish, but those things typically weigh 9lb, and anyway, it's a single-cut.

I bought at least two of these via the HFC boards here.

I still have the blue/green wraptail; it looks a lot more subdued when it's not in direct sunlight.

No longer mine. '95 Special FM w/upgraded pups:

Ah I remember that one well.  I picked it up off ebay from a seller from the Bronx for just shy of $100 over the "used Hamer HFC approved price" many moons ago.  The purple had faded to almost a grey color on the top (but was still a very dark, almost black, purple on the back and sides).  In hindsight I should have just left it as-is, but since it was a rare color for the model I decided to bring it to New Hartford for a  factory refinish.  They gave me a great deal on the refinish for the job they did, but it still was almost as much as I paid for the guitar.  I later sold it to a member on here (Caddie) and he in turn sold it and it has since fallen off my radar of where it now resides.  Had the neck been a little fuller (and had I not found an even rarer trans-violet wraptail Studio w/a fuller neck profile) I likely would still own it.  Anyway...sorry, I had to share my stroll down memory lane with a little back story on that guitar for the HFC.
