Slippery Knobs

hamerhead

Question

My Shishkov has black tophats that are too slippery for my stupid hands. I'd like to switch them for a low-profile knurled knob or something unique with better grippability.

Whaddaya got?

It's not the knobs as much as it is the company.

I am aware of that..,yet... nonetheless....the knobs look great and solve this issue.

What about using a nail file rather than grip tape?

Anything in a small black grippy knob is good, but I'm with Kiz 1000% - no Peavey.  The humanity!

I like the way the stock ones look, I just need better function.  I like the o-ring groove idea, and the tape idea (because it's reversible).

And yeah, my pinky is kinda AFU and I've always had issues with the smaller tophats. A thin coat of clear boot glue would probably cure it.

Great ideas so far!

Heatshrink?

I’ve used these old BC Rich knobs on almost all my guitars since the 80’s. Perfect for little finger rolling!
I think Ed Roman still has some. The ring on the top is chrome for a little style.

And those Peavey knobs are hideous. B)

There are various Ibanez Sure Grip knobs, some are reproduced.
You could just dip you existing knobs in Flex Seal.
You could spray the knobs on the guitar 🥺 or remove them first.  Your choice.

It doesn't matter...just don't listen to Gene when he chimes in.

I just went to the hardware store and got a couple O rings the appropriate size. They've stayed in place without any mod to the knob (almost rhymes, kinda dirty tho').

I'm not sure how easy these are to find but the old Ibanez sure grip knobs may be something to look out for; they're like a cross of a speed knob and a top hat, with a knurled rubber ring, they also come in black.

I like these and have been looking them.

perhaps a reversible mod would fall within's @kizanski's rigid spec.

(and yes, I'm expecting further kiz demerits for linking a TGP thread.)

I might like these even more ... from a functional point of view. The jury's still out on the aesthetics however.

Maybe someone makes a clear rubberized paint that could be brushed or sprayed on.

And Please don't bring up the Phil Swift/flex paint infomercial.

If you have a heat gun and 1" to 1-1/2" heat shrink tubing, you could cover the top half of the knob and shrink it down.

That might work.

Try this:

Clear rubberized sealant you could spray on and maintain the same look.

Sure.

Just don't play outdoors near flowers in the Spring and Summer.

I personally put  Ibanez sure grip on 3 of my guitars (including an Artist and a Monaco Elite) and I like them a lot. I can't stand slippery knobs

you can find some at good price on the bay

I'm pretty sure that putting an O ring around your slippery knob is dangerous, especially if you leave it on there for very long.
