Reverb: 1993 P90 Special Tobacco Burst - Looks Minty

Recommended Posts

I saw this pop up on Reverb, listed as a 2003.  Turns out it's a 1993, which has a lower serial number than my super skinny 1993 P90 special, so most likely it's got that same neck, which causes my hand to cramp sometimes.

However I know some really want those thin necks. It's got the OHSC and if it is in as good a condition as the seller says, it's definitely a much better deal than getting some Gibson Double Cut.

Wow, I am impressed if you can read that serial number from this picture!   The original ad had disappeared this afternoon, but then it reappeared as a 1993.

If you up the brightness in a photo editor you can just make it out.  But I messaged the seller, and the serial starts with 3322, which puts it before my P90 Special and my Studio from 1993. Though, some have pointed out that the neck carve could also be specified, so the only way to really know would be to try it out.

It's only located about an hour and a half from me...

That IS nice! Like the color, like the overall look, and those P-90s. Condition appears to be way beyond excellent judging from the photos. I would be fine with owning that guitar. I don't know if he is out of line as far as the asking price but if it is indeed in that great of condition it would be worth that to me...............

...offer is available also so...................

The way I see it, is that for that price you get a pretty much minty guitar that is far beyond what you would get for $2000 from Gibson. I think though, I'm going to keep holding out for a P90 special, studio, or artist.  It's so tempting though. Right now though I've got a ton going on so no time to go see it. If it's still up in a week I might see if I can see it in person.  If it has the same neck as my P90 special though, as good as the condition is, it would still cause hand cramps.

And the P90s in mine were like 16k ohms I wound up with Wolfe Mean and Meaner P90s Much sweater tones, more vintage maybe to me.

I like that burst didn’t know it was offered in 93.

That's a good looker.  Many of the TSB's from that era had a center that turned a not-very-attractive greenish yellow and earned the finish the name "diaperburst".😝. Mine was a great player, though.  I'd have kept it except that I found myself with, like 4 P90 Specials at one point.

The one in my id picture is a 93. From the ads I saw that was the only burst. There were three finishes for sure from the ad that comes to mind. Burst, TV Yellow and Cherry. Mine spent its life under a bass players bed. It’s still like new and it looks like the ad. Maybe they did other bursts too. I like mine it’s different. I got it here from a guy near Philly.

That's funny!  Do you mean like this one?  This one is from a listing in Moscow!  Apparently, the pickups are Lollars, but the guitar has had a refret.  Cheap price, though.

Yeah, that is also what I recall.  This one definitely doesn't look that way though.  Still waiting to hear back from the seller regarding some stuff.

I dunno if it's a hard and fast rule, but I found that every early-mid '90's Hamer I checked out that came stock with Schaller Mini M6 tuners tended to have the skinny neck.  I never found a Hamer that came with full-sized factory-installed Hamer/Schaller M6 tuners, that had a thin neck.  "Medium"-sized necks, yes.  Thin ones, no.

I have two 1993s, one with the "medium" and one "thin", and I think they both have the full size M6 tuners. The Candy Apple Red thin neck special I have was apparently a dealer exclusive color? Maybe it's a bit different then.

The seller of this guitar said it's definitely slightly thicker than an Ibanez RG neck, which are quite thin.

why does the head-stock look like an "after" picture from a Viagra ad?

Fisheye lens?  Stadium Logo?

Either way, I'm definitely out of the running for this one.  Just found another way to scratch my Hamer P-90 itch that won't have a skinny neck.
