And if you want to make a side deal with the seller and he's willing to cancel the auction and take your offer then that's cool too.

Doing that is helping an Ebay member abuse the user agreement and cheating Ebay out of the seller fees.

The idea of posting user ids here is bad too. There should be no public domain existance of such a list. Somebody could easily get accused of shill bidding if both the sellers and some bidders appear on the same list.

Deep pockets wins. I bid what I'm willing to pay, pretty much without regard to who is bidding. When I sell, I want the same from everybody else.

I like to live by the "What goes around comes around rule".

I find it interesting that the poll question asks if you would voluntarily (as opposed to being compelled?) share your eBay ID, yet many seem to interpret the question as: Would you conspire with other members of the HFC in order to minimize the winning bid of a given auction.

To answer the question as it was asked: Yes.

To answer the question many have implied: No.

I bid what I'm willing to pay. I don't snipe and I don't ask seller's to pull auctions early. I hate shill bidding and bid shielding, so if I suspect it, I just don't bid. Frankly, I'd rather deal with an individual or dealer from here (or the other two guitar boards I read/post to) than an unknown on fleaBay.

CajunBoy is right...what comes around goes around. You reap what you sow, later than you sow, and more than you sow. Yeeha.

If it's a Hamer, it'll be up for sale on the forum in a few years (or less) anyway, if a forum member snags it. I don't mind anyone knowing my ebay ID, and I have bid against people on this board. Would I relax my bidding if it was something that i knew they really wanted, and I only had a casual interest in? Sure...why not?

I don't like the idea at all.

I think I can consider many here as my friends, but if I want to bid on something I'm going to bid regardless of how badly someone else may want it. If they want it badly enough, they will outbid me.........as it should be.

My ebay ID is the same as my HFC ID. And as my HFC brothers and sisters, when you see my name on a guitar auction it is your duty to outbid me so I don't get in more trouble with my wife!

Now you're thinking! I may use this one in reverse -

"But Honey, I'm not just buying another guitar, I'm saving a family!"

I like it

I only bid against that mirrorimij guy - even if I don't really want what is in the auction.

Deep pockets win. I never understood why someone would complain about losing an auction that THEY didn't bid high enough to win. Why is it anyone else's fault but your own? I never blame someone else when I lose an auction. I might be disappointed but I'm the one that set MY maximum price not anyone else.

Complaining about sniping isn't going to get sympathy from me either. Another bidder bidding at the last second won't matter if YOU have the higher bid amount. Put your money where your mouth is! If you lost it because you didn't bid high enough it's no ones fault but your own!

We might pay more for some Hamers this way but we also might make more when we're on the selling end.

My take on this is pretty much what seems to be the consensus on this board...I'll definitely bid on something someone else from the HFC has bid on if I really want it. There have been several occasions where I've seen bids from people I recognized from the board and questioned whether or not I should bid on that particular item. I would not do anything that is dishonest in order to get a guitar. Like cajunboy said "what comes around goes around".

I guess that knowing who the seller is on an auction is important to me to know if I could trust them in the event that I bid on their guitar. So far, I've had good experiences with e-bay but I'm very careful too.

So, bid what you are ready to pay and hope to win.

Nick

BTW, my e-bay handle is not too hard to figure out. Goes something like sw686....

I have no problem sharing my eBay ID. It's "frozentundraguy".

However, I don't want anyone to avoid bidding on anything just because you see my ID on a bidder list. Here's why:

1. Virtually all of the real bidding on desireable guitars occurs in the last 20 SECONDS of an auction. As much as eBay claims to discourage "sniping" it has constructed the process in a manner that encourages it. In fact, a purely rational buyer, who is seeking to minimize the cost of a purchase, will never enter a bid prior to the final few seconds of the auction. Therefore, it's unlikely that deferring to another HFC member is going to significantly increase that person's chance at ending up with the high bid. More often, it will result in a non-HFCer winning the auction with a last second bid.

2. If I see something that I am very interested in,I will sometimes enter a bid, then e-mail the seller to let them know approximately what I believe the value of the item to be and that I'll likely increase my bid later. This stategy has prevented a few "behind the scenes" deals from ending auctions prematurely. I would never, however, expect someone else to avoid bidding against me simply because I placed a bid first.

3. The concept of not bidding on items that others are interested simply shifts the potential "reward" of winning the auction from the person who is willing to pay the highest price to the person who enters the earliest bid, or if there is behind the scenes discussion between interested bidders, to the person who claims to "want it more". Why is this a more fair outcome? It certainly is less fair to the seller.

My position is, as a bidder, I will not engage in any discussions with any other bidder. I believe that the most equitable way to determine who "wants the item most" is through bidding. As a seller, I do what I can to make sure that bidders can't collude. The most effective way to do this is to select the option to keep bidders' identities private.

I will never be angry at another board member who outbids me on an eBay auction. For what it's worth, feel free to snipe anything I'm bidding on. That's how the game is played.

Another pet peeve of mine is when someone whine's about losing an auction by only $10! They would have gladly paid just $10 more to have that guitar right now...why didn't that person email me and I could have told them that?!! etc.

You may have lost by $10, or the minimum ebay raise at that price point, but you don't know the actual maximum bid of the winning buyer. You may have bid $600, he wins with $610 but he may have had a maximum bid of $950! If you wanted it so bad you should have bid more when you had the chance!

rant off!

I prefer purchasing from board members myself. My first hamer came from FleaBay (25th woo hoo), but subsequent finds have all rolled in from HFCers (ya bastidz).

I prefer selling to board members but too many have let me down, so I use Ebay most of the time.

My Ebay handle is my board name. If I am bidding on something and you recognize my board name, stay away or the retribution will be fierce and immediate. I know where you live, and I'm watching you now.

Seriously, bid away, I have my proxy set as high as I want to bid anyway.

This happened to me when JohnnyThunders outbid me on a Hamer Checkerboard guitar strap at the last second...........I only mildly hate him!

Just chiming in to be counted, although my opinion is no different than others:

* Highest bidder wins, regardless of who they are.

* I make a VERY RARE exception if I can live without and know the other HFC'er can't

* Mute point since we almost ALWAYS have to bid against Fung on the cool shit anyway

* Last second shilling is part of the E-Bay auction process, and falls under the appropriate jurisdiction of item 1.....highest bidder wins.

* Kizanski should be bid against on absolutely everything contrary to item 2

you probably lose a significant amount of bidders who view this as a possible shill bidding cover-up tactic. i doubt bidder collusion is much of an issue, especially among strangers. high rollers who know each other can collude regardless.

Hey guys,

I just bought an '82 Hamer USA Cruisebass on E-bay. Is there someone named homernut that belongs on this messageboard? If he is from this messageboard, thanks for not outbidding me too much on that auction.

We have a "Hamernut."

"Homernut" is from the Simpsons Fan Club Message Board (SFC).

I concur: collusion. Quit being a baby if you can't afford the guitar, don't harp on someone else to not bid.

I don't have much money, but I have a shitty beat-to-shit Hamer studio. I'm not going to cry like a bitch about it....

I know most of yer ebay handles even before i joined here because i did some search and destroy missions to find out whos who... but i WILL bid on items i want... i also PLAY every item i get.... BUT having 30+ guitars now i really dont NEED any of them really.... so if you guys really want an item then go for it ... but since i am the king of ebay i will run you up to what my price is of what im willing to pay and i will not go above that.... i will also sit at the comp with 5-6 windows open at a time with bids when snipers try to take things in the last minute with bids sittings there waiting for me to jsut hit "bid".... like i said you want something and you see my handle on there ill back off... but if its something i really want (which there is only 4 left that i need for my collection) then your going to have to chase my bids.....

bid aggresive or dont bid is my philosiphy on ebay..... might sound mean but like they said earlier no matter what deep pockets talk... but then again im not the meany this makes me out to be either..... shoot me an email and i wont bid any further..... its that simple...

Sir Douglas :)
